For manufacturing ophthalmic lenses and other optical form bodies made of plastic material, plastic form parts are used which are made by non-cutting shaping and are then further worked by mechanical production steps. Said plastic form parts are circular blanks (1) made of two different plastic materials which are firmly joined to each other. Thereby, an interior lens element (2) that consists of a high-quality material is concentrically surrounded by a ring fixture (3) which consists of a low priced material. Either surface of the lens element (2) may feature any given geometry. During mechanical working, the ring fixture (3) is used for mounting as well as for depositing and, in addition, for stabilizing the workpiece (9). For this reason it is partially maintained throughout the mechanical working and is cut off at the end only.

The polishing wheel further comprises a substrate layer (14) being made of an elastomer material affixed to the hub (12) and coaxial with the axis (26). The substrate layer (14) has an outer surface (20) having a substantially symmetrical shape with respect to the axis (26). The polishing wheel (10) further comprises a continuous cover layer (16) affixed to the outer surface (20) and coaxial with the axis (26). The continuous cover layer (16) is made of an elastomer material covering substantially entirely the outer surface (20).

The invention relates to a method for manufacturing a spectacle lens made of plastic material wherein the said method comprises the steps of: providing a plastic form part which is made by non-cutting shaping procedures, wherein the plastic form part is a plastic circular blank which consists of two different plastic materials that are firmly connected to each other, wherein an interior lens element consists of a material suitable for the manufacturing of spectacle lenses and is concentrically surrounded by a ring fixture made of plastic, both surfaces of the lens element being of arbitrary geometry; afterwards, working the plastic form part by mechanical production steps by means of cutting procedures chosen from milling, lathing, grinding, polishing and engraving, wherein during mechanical working the ring fixture is available for mounting and depositing and, in addition, for stabilizing the worked-on circular blank, the ring fixture being partially maintained during the whole mechanical working process; and cutting off the ring fixture after completion of the mechanical working.
