Abstract: The structure (1) of sleeves and plates which encloses the core of a pressurised water-cooled nuclear reactor is dismantled by cutting while immersed in the pond (9) adjoining the reactor vessel (8). The less radioactive sections are placed in containers (27) of the type used to carry reactor guide tubes when these are replaced, and the more radioactive sections are placed in containers (28) of the type used to carry fuel assemblies. Containers (27,28) are removed from the pool separately. Also claimed is the cutting equipment used in the pool.

Abstract: The process, for use on a pressurized water reactor (PWR) that is shut down and cool, comprises raising the core top plate (4a) with lifting and handling equipment in a pond above the core vessel (1). When a fuel assembly remains attached to the top plate, a fuel assembly holder (22) is lowered into a position where it holds the fuel assembly onto the top plate while it is transferred to a receiver (15) within the pond. The holder is then released, and the fuel assembly is deposited in the receiver, if necessary after cutting its centering pin.
