    Abstract: A collar seal (34) is configured for a turbine nozzle vane (32). The seal (34) includes a retainer (36) having a circumferential airfoil contour conforming with the airfoil contour of the vane (32). A flexible leaf (48) is surrounded by the retainer (36) and fixedly joined thereto. A woven sheath (50) encases the leaf (48) and is fixedly joined to the retainer (36). In an exemplary embodiment, the collar seal (34) surrounds one end of a ceramic turbine vane (32) mounted in a metal supporting band (26),(28).

    Abstract: A method for modifying a sealing system of a hydrogen-cooled generator includes coupling to a sealing device of the generator a contacting seal comprising a plurality of non-metallic bristles projecting from an aluminum body with tips of the bristles engaging a rotor of the generator. Another method includes removing a portion of a non-contacting seal, providing a replacement sealing device comprising an aluminum body and a plurality of non-metallic bristles projecting therefrom, and replacing the removed portion of the non-contacting seal by coupling the aluminum body to the non-contacting seal such that tips of the bristles contact the rotor. Another method includes removing an original sealing device, providing a replacement sealing device comprising an aluminum body and a plurality of non-metallic bristles projecting therefrom, and inserting the replacement sealing device into the generator such that tips of the bristles contact a rotor of the generator.

    Abstract: A rotary machine 10 includes a rotary component 18 inside a stationary component 16. A brush sealing system 11, disposed between the stationary 16 and rotary 18 components, includes a holding device 24 coupled to the stationary component 16. A plurality of carbon bristles 22 are provided, each bristle 22 having a first end 34 coupled to the holding device 24 and a second end 36 protruding from the holding device 24 towards the rotary component 18, the diameter of each bristle 22 is 0.00254 to 0.0254 mm (0.1 to 1 mils). The holding device 24 may have two plates 38,40 to hold the bristles 22 and there may be a matrix 42 between these plates 38,40 to which the first end 34 of each bristle 22 is coupled. The bristles 22 may have to conform to standards with regard to strength, fiber modulus, friction coefficient, thermal conductivity, and temperature capability.

    Abstract: A compliant seal (20) for use between rotating blades (16) and a static shroud (18) surrounding the rotating blades (16) in a steam or gas turbine (10) is disclosed. The seal (20) includes a tip surface (36), substantially resistant to wear due to rubbing by the tip of the rotating blades (16), and an elastic biasing member (38), comprising a biasing element. The wear-resistant surface (36) is thus biased against the tips of the rotating blades (16) to seal a gas path between the rotating blades (16) and the static shroud (18).
