Abstract: In one aspect, the present invention provides a method for recovering bitumen from an oil sand, the method comprising: (a) contacting a bitumen-containing oil sand with a first solvent mixture of cyclohexane and ethanol to provide an extraction mixture comprising a sand phase and an organic phase; (b) separating the sand phase from the organic phase comprising bitumen, ethanol and cyclohexane; (c) separating an azeotropic mixture comprising cyclohexane and ethanol from the organic phase; and (d) recovering bitumen from the organic phase. The first solvent mixture comprises from about 95 to about 65 percent cyclohexane and from about 5 to about 35 percent ethanol.

Abstract: An article having low wettability is presented. The article comprises a body portion and a surface portion disposed on the body portion. The surface portion comprises a plurality of features disposed on the body portion, and the features have a size, shape, and orientation selected such that the surface portion has a wettability sufficient to generate, with a reference liquid, a contact angle of at least about 100 degrees. The features comprise a height dimension (h) and a width dimension (a), and are disposed in a spaced-apart relationship characterized by a spacing dimension (b). The ratio of b/a and the ratio of h/a are such that the drop exhibits metastable non- Wenzel behavior.

Abstract: A method of preparing block copolyestercarbonates wherein at least one dihydroxysubstituted aromatic hydrocarbon moiety and at least one aromatic diacid chloride are reacted under interfacial conditions to give a hydroxy-terminated polyester intermediate. The dihydroxy-substituted aromatic compound is used in about 10 mole to about 125 mole percent excess relative to the diacid chloride. Enhanced control of hydroxy-terminated polyester intermediate molecular weight is achieved by limiting the amount of water present to provide a final salt level of greater than 30 percent. The final salt level is a theoretical value but is readily calculable. The hydroxyterminated polyester intermediate is then converted to a block copolyestercarbonate by reaction with a carbonate precursor such as phosgene.
