    Abstract: The production of polyether-amide (PEA) solutions comprises the polycondensation of dicarboxylic acid derivatives of formula Cl-C(O)-Ar-C(O)-Cl (I) with aromatic diamines of formula (II). In the formulae: Ar = arylene or heteroarylene in which the two carbonyl groups are not adjacent, i.e. not in the ortho position to one another, and the Ar groups may be substituted with one or two optionally branched 1-3C alkyl or alkoxy, aryl, aryloxy, 1-6C perfluoroalkyl or perfluoroalkoxy, F, Cl, Br and/or I groups; and X = -CMe2-, -C(CF3)2-, -CO-, -SO-, -SO2-, -CH2-, -S-, -O- or a direct bond. The reaction is carried out in aprotic polar solvents, optionally with up to 50 mole% of (II) replaced by m-phenylenediamine (m-PDA), and the solution obtained after polymerisation is treated with sufficient ammonia gas to neutralise the hydrochloric acid which is formed, and then filtered to remove the ammonium salt. Also claimed are: (i) semipermeable, porous, asymmetric membranes based on polyaramid; and (ii) the production of such membranes by precipitation from the above polycondensate solution with a precipitating liquid which is miscible with the solvent in the polymer solution.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a method of preparing polyesters in powder form by means of polycondensation of dicarboxylic acid diol precondensates (oligomers) at elevated temperature in a heat transfer medium in the presence of polycondensation catalysts and optionally cocondensable modifiers. The liquid heat transfer medium is inert and free of aromatic components and has a boiling point in the range of 180 to 300 DEG C. The dicarboxylic acid diol precondensate contains on analytical average 1 to 30 mol % oligomer or monomer containing at least one sulfonic acid group. The weight ratio of dicarboxylic acid diol precondensate to liquid heat transfer medium is in the range of 20:80 to 80:20 and the polycondensation is carried out in the presence of a dispersion stabilizer, the resulting polyester being water-soluble.
