X = H, F, Cl or Br; n = 0-6; m = 0-3; R'f = -CF2-O-CFBr-CF2Br or R''f-CFH-(CF2)n'-(CF2-O-CF(CF3)-)m'-. (III) has a b.pt. of max. 180 deg.C. (I) pref. contains 0.5-30wt.% (II), which pref. has recurring units of formula (IIA); u = 0, 1 or 2; v = 0 or 1; w = 1-7; A' and B' = F or CF3; D = H, Cl, Br or -COOR; R = 1-10C alkyl. Pref.     Abstract: Perfluorinated polymers (I) contg. monomer units of formula (II) (with m = 0-3; n = 2-10; X = COF) are produced by reaction of the corresp. polymer (III) contg. units of formula (II) (with X = CF2H) at 150-300 deg C with a gaseous oxidising agent (IV) which is capable of liberating iodine from acidified aq. KI soln. Pref. (I) also contain monomer units of formula CF2=CF-R (with R= F or 1-10C perfluoroalkyl, pref. F or CF3), and pref. F or CF3), and pref. also units of formula (II) (with m = 0-3; n = 1-10; X = CF3); pref. comonomer units are omega-H-perfluoropropyl perfluorovinyl ether (H-PPVE) and TFE, esp. pref. with perfluoropropyl perfluorovinyl ether (PPVE) as third comonomer; (IV) is a nitrogen oxide, or air, O2, ozone or a mixt.; polymers (I) (with X = COOH or X = CONH2) are produced directly by adding to (IV) an amt. of water vapour or NH3 which is equal to or greater than the mol. wt. of CF2H gps.. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) (with COOH or carboxy derivs. as functional gps.) are useful for the prodn. of cation exchange membranes for chlor-alkali electrolysis, and for the prodn. of hydrophilic coatings on hydrophobic polymer surfaces. The invention provides a simpler, less expensive process for the prodn. of (I), compared with prior-art processes.

    Abstract: Substantially non-crosslinked fluorocarbon polymers containing carboxyl groups are prepared starting from non-crosslinked and in some cases new, fluorocarbon polymers in which the linear macromolecules carry side chains containing the end group -CHFX (X is F or CF3). The starting polymers are first reacted with peroxodisulfuryl difluoride FSO2O-OSO2F to give the corresponding fluorosulfato derivatives containing the side chain end groups. (X is F or CF3). In the event that X is F, these derivaties are then converted into the corresponding carboalkoxy derivatives by means of an alcohol, the fluorosulfato group being split off, and these carboalkoxy derivatives are then converted by saponification into the products containing the free carboxyl groups; the fluorosulfato derivatives can also be hydrolyzed with water, if appropriate in the presence of an inert solvent and/or bases, to give, without further treatment, the products containing the free carboxyl groups. The fluorosulfato derivatives in which X is CF3 in the side chain end groups are first decomposed in the presence of catalytic amounts of alkali metal fluorides and/or aprotic nitrogen bases to give the products containing the side chain end groups and the latter are then hydrolyzed to give the products containing the free carboxyl group. Virtually non-crosslinked fluorocarbon polymers containing carboxyl groups are of industrial importance in the form of cation exchanger membranes in electrolytic cells, particularly in chlor-alkali electrolysis.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a method for the electrolytic decarboxylation of a perfluoro carboxylic acid of the formula (I) with x = 1 to 4 or of soluble salts of this acid or of a mixture of this acid or of these salts with another perfluoro carboxylic acid of the formula (II) with y = 0 to 4 or the soluble salts thereof and subsequent dimerisation of the radicals produced in the decarboxylation. The electrolysis is carried out in methanol or methanol/water mixtures. This results in perfluoropolyethers of the formula or a mixture of symmetrical and asymmetrical perfluoropolyethers when more than one perfluoro carboxylic acid is employed.
