Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide a new display which can easily execute switching since supply resistance is low, shows a superior contrast through a black matrix and shows the value of superior brightness by means of a high opening rate. CONSTITUTION: The liquid crystal display contains two substrate, two electrodes 2 and 2 either of which is made into a structure and at least one orientation film and a liquid crystal. In the display, the upper face or the lower face of an area in an electrode layer which does not have an opposite electrode is coated by a light absorption conductive material.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To inexpensively obtain a shock-resistant liquid crystal switching element and a display device by using a ferroelectric liquid crystal mixture containing an olephilic compd. for a liquid crystal material and applying continuous and periodical voltage till the liquid crystal layer shows bookshelf orientation or quasi-bookshelf orientation before starting the operation. CONSTITUTION: This switching element consists of two supporting plates having at least one orienting layer, at least one polarizer attached to the supporting plate, and a liquid crystal material injected into the space between the two supporting plates. The liquid crystal material to be used here consists of a ferroelectric liquid crystal mixture containing at least one kind of a liquid crystal basic component and at least one kind of an olephilic compd. added to the component. Before starting up the element, continuous and periodical voltage is applied on electrodes of the switching element or a display device till the liquid crystal layer shows bookshelf or quasi-bookshelf orientation. Thereby, the obtd. liquid crystal switching element and the display device have excellent shock resistance and can be produced at a low cost.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide a ferroelectric liquid crystal(FLC) display which does not exhibit an optical hysteresis even if the value of spontaneous polarization is high by using an FLC mixture having the high spontaneous polarization and the natural spiral pitch smaller than half the thickness of the layer. CONSTITUTION: The FLC display, which can be operated by using a surface stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal SSFLC technique, is of 1 to 10μm and more particularly 1.2 to 3μm in the thickness of the layer. The ferroelectric liquid crystal(FLC) mixture which exhibits the high spontaneous polarization PS>20nC.cm (measured at 25 deg.C) and of which the natural spiral pitch is below half the thickness of the layer of the SSFLC display is utilized for the FLC display. The characteristics exhibiting the high spontaneous polarization, the first assigned spiral pitch at a smectic phase and the second assigned spiral pitch as a cholesteric phase are satisfied by an asymmetrical liquid crystal base mixture added with a slight amt. of symmetrical additive impurities. The preferable compds. in this asymmetrical liquid crystal base mixture are expressed by formulas (I) and (II).

Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide a twisted helical ferroelectric liquid crystal element having high response and high contrast and to provide a ferroelectric liquid crystal compsn. to be used for the same. CONSTITUTION: A ferroelectric liquid crystal layer 15 having specified thickness is held between plural electrode plates 11, 12 at least one of which is transparent or translucent to constitute a twisted helical ferroelectric liquid crystal cell 10. By applying voltage on electrode plates 11, 12 through the layer, the optical anisotropy of the element can be changed. The ferroelectric liquid crystal which constitutes the layer shows a ferroelectric phase, while it shows a chiral nematic phase at a temp. higher than the temp. of the ferroelectric phase. In the ferroelectric phase, the pitch of natural helix of the ferroelectric liquid crystal is shorter enough than the thickness of the ferroelectric liquid crystal layer 15 of the element so that the ferroelectric liquid crystal has a helically oriented vector structure and has no stabilized surface. In the nematic phase, the pitch of natural helix of the ferroelectric liquid crystal is longer enough than the thickness of the ferroelectric liquid crystal layer 15 so that the layer 15 of the element can be easily oriented.

CONSTITUTION: The liq. crystal switch and display element are used in a display. The display element consists of a ferroelectric liq. crystal medium(FLC), two electrodes, one polarizer, two transparent carrier plates and one orienting layer. This orienting layer has direct electric connection with the electrodes and contains an electrically conductive polymer having repeating untis represented by formula I, wherein each of R and R is H, 1-16C alkyl, 1-16C alkoxy or halogen, X is S or NH, Y is BF4 , PF5 , PO4 , etc., (n) is an integer of 4-100 and (m) is an integer of 1-30. Optical hysteresis phenomenon in the FLC is suppressed.
