    Abstract: PURPOSE: To make it possible to improve the contrast and brightness of images by using a compd. having hydrophilicity and lipophilic in combination as oriented layers. CONSTITUTION: This liquid crystal display has a transparent outer plate, electrodes, polarizers, ferroelectric liquid crystal media and the oriented layers. The oriented layers contain components having the hydrophilicity and lipophilicity. Namely, the oriented layers which are originally hydrophilic and lipophilic are subjected to a treatment to make these components to amphoteric compds. or the amphoteric compds. are chemically bonded to the oriented layers, by which these layers are made amphoteric. The amphoteric compds. have surfactant-like properties and the oriented layers made amphoteric improve the contrast of the display, thereby brightening the images.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To improve the lightness, contrast and switching of a liq. crystal display by incorporating a lipophilic compd., a lipophilic property imparting compd. or its mixture into at least one of the constituent elements of the liq. crystal display. CONSTITUTION: In order to improve the max. lightness, max. contrast and display speed of a liq. crystal display, an orienting layer of polyimide or polyamide as one of the constituent elements of the display is composed of 50-99.99wt.% polyimide or polyamide and 0.01-50wt.% one or more kinds of lipophilic compds. or lipophilic property imparting compds. The compds. may be incorporated into an insulating layer, an electrode, a transparent substrate or a polarizing plate. The lipophilic compds. may be monomer, oligomer or polymer compds. and have low polarity and high lipophilic characteristics.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To prepare an oriented film which is capable of providing a liquid crystal display with excellent liquid crystal orientation, high contrast and high transmissivity in a bright state and further enables the manufacture of a very stable liquid crystal switching/display device by using a modified poly(hydroxystyrene) as a constituent material of the orient film for the liquid crystal display. CONSTITUTION: This oriented film for a liquid crystal display contains: (a) a poly(hydroxystyrene) produced from a monomer represented by the formula (in the formula: R is H, CH3 , F or Cl; and each of R and R is H, R , OR , SR , OH, F, Cl, Br, NO2 , a phenyl group or CH2 X, independently from the other, wherein R is a 1-6C straight chain or branched chain alkyl group whose at least one hydrogen atom is optionally substituted by a fluorine atom and X is p-tosylate, 2-mesitylate, mesylate or triflate group, or OOC-CH3 , OH, Cl or Br); and (b) at least one compound selected from among macrocyclic compounds, cryptands, coronands, podands, mercapto compounds and ionophores.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To inexpensively obtain a shock-resistant liquid crystal switching element and a display device by using a ferroelectric liquid crystal mixture containing an olephilic compd. for a liquid crystal material and applying continuous and periodical voltage till the liquid crystal layer shows bookshelf orientation or quasi-bookshelf orientation before starting the operation. CONSTITUTION: This switching element consists of two supporting plates having at least one orienting layer, at least one polarizer attached to the supporting plate, and a liquid crystal material injected into the space between the two supporting plates. The liquid crystal material to be used here consists of a ferroelectric liquid crystal mixture containing at least one kind of a liquid crystal basic component and at least one kind of an olephilic compd. added to the component. Before starting up the element, continuous and periodical voltage is applied on electrodes of the switching element or a display device till the liquid crystal layer shows bookshelf or quasi-bookshelf orientation. Thereby, the obtd. liquid crystal switching element and the display device have excellent shock resistance and can be produced at a low cost.
