Abstract: Prepn. of cycloalkylideneacetonitriles (I) by reacting cycloalkanones with acetonitrile in the liquid phase in the presence of an azeotonitrile in the liquid phase in separate water and of catalytic amts. of alkali(ne earth) alcoholates, the alcohol component of which has a b.pt. which is higher (pref. by 50-150 degrees C) than the b.pt. of the lowest-boiling reaction component. (I) are of technical interest, since the activated double bond permits a number of reactions (e.g. Michael addition or similar reactions) leading to useful products (e.g. pharmaceuticals). Single-stage process (intermediate beta-hydroxynitriles not isolated). Alcohol from alcoholate catalyst does not distil from the reaction mixture, so that separated water is not solubilized.
