    Abstract: The alpha -modification of cis-naphthoylenebis(benzimidazole) is unstable in many media and up to date has therefore only been used as a vat dye. However, according to the invention, the alpha -modification can readily be used for pigmenting in the mass polyolefins such as polyethylene, polypropylene or analogous copolymers. During pigmenting, the pigment which is prepared in a conventional manner, is stable in that modification and produces strong red dyeings.

USE/ADVANTAGE - The prepn. is claimed for pigmenting high mol. organic materials and lacquer systems. It has much better dispersibility, flocculation stability, rheology, gloss and strength of colour than usual and is useful in plastic compsns., melts, spinning solns., lacquers, paints and printing inks.

    Abstract: In the context of the conventional condensation of naphthalene- 1,4,5,8-tetracarboxylic acid with 1,2-diaminobenzene, the napthoylene- bis-benzimidazole isomers formed are obtained together in the cis and transform. In practice, there was the object of shifting the isomer ratio of the mixture obtained, i.e. of increasing the yield of the desired trans product and of reducing the yield of the cis product. At the same time, there was the necessity to develop a preparation process which optimised the yield and improved the waste water situation. This object is achieved according to the invention in that the starting compounds are subjected to a precondensation at 60 DEG to 110 DEG C in aqueous medium using virtually stoichiometric initial amounts and the condensation is then completed in a second step at 130 DEG to 180 DEG C.

    Abstract: Process for preparing 1,3,6,8-tetrabromopyrene by brominating pyrene in aqueous suspension with simultaneous reoxidation of the resulting hydrogen bromide to bromine by means of an oxidizing agent, which comprises reacting pyrene in a highly concentrated aqueous suspension having a pyrene-water weight ratio of 1:1.2 to 2 with bromine at temperatures of 40 DEG to 65 DEG C. with simultaneous reoxidation of the resulting hydrogen bromide to bromine using an oxidizing agent, completing the bromination by heating the reaction mixture to temperatures of 70 DEG to 130 DEG C., reducing excess bromine with a reducing agent to hydrogen bromide and subjecting the 1,3,6,8-tetrabromopyrene formed, preferably without intermediate isolation, to an alkaline aftertreatment at temperatures of 40 DEG to 100 DEG C. within the pH range 8.5 to 12.

    Abstract: Regeneration of spent H2SO4 (pref. 70-90%) contg. organic impurities and/or (NH4)2SO4 in a Pauling's appts. into which the spent acid is fed through the dephlegmator is improved in that an oxidising agent is fed into the vat th rough an immersed tube. The oxidising agent is pref. a cpd. of tri- or penta- valent nitrogen (e.g. HNO3 or nitrosyl sulphuric acid) or Caro acid. Introduction of the oxidising agent under the surface of the boiling acid prevents losses occuring in the conventional process when the oxidising agent is introduced into the dephlagmator together with the impure acid (as it is partly carried away by the vapour stream). The presence of nitrogen cpds. in the bulk of the acid suppresses corrosion of the vat which is pref. made from grey cast iron.
