Abstract: A process for the preparation of a graft copolymer which comprises reacting (I) a hydrocarbon resin based on cyclopentadiene or methylcyclopentadiene or both at an elevated temperature with (II) an olefinically unsaturated polycarboxylic acid compound and (III) a copolyerisable unsaturated monomer in a manner such that for at least a part of the reaction the unsaturated monomer (III) and the polycarboxylic acid compound (II) are simultaneously present, a graft-polymer based on I. a hydrocarbon resin based on cyclopentadiene or methylcyclopentadiene or on both as essential monomers, II. olefinically unsaturated polycarboxylic acid compounds and III. copolymerisable unsaturated monomers and a printing ink which comprises, as at least part of the binder component, said polymer, a pigment and a solvent.

Abstract: Adhesive materials based on thermal copolymerisates of (A) 85-60 (90-70) wt.% cyclopentadiene units and (B) 5-40 (10-30)% vinyl esters of 1-18C monocarboxylic acids. The copolymers have av. mol. wt. 400-3000 and softening pt. 20-150 degrees C. Pref. (A) consists of a mixt. of cyclopentadiene units, =30 wt.% being 1-4C alkyl cyclopentadiene. (B) is pref. vinyl acetate. The copolymers have Br values of 60-120 and iodine colour values of 8-20. They are pref. catalytically hydrogenated at 200-230 degrees C under 20-300 (50-100) atmos. in hydrocarbon solvent or melt form, after which they have Br values below 20 and iodine colour values below 6. Used in combination with ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymers as hot melt adhesives, and in combination with natural rubber as press.-sensitive adhesives. They can be used in all types of adhesives to replace natural or terpene resins. In hot melt adhesives they show improved storage stability and higher bond strength to plastics, e.g. polyester, melamine and PVC, as well as wood. In solvent-based adhesives they give better adhesion and cohesion.

Abstract: An adhesive binding agent based on at least one polymer of dicyclopentadiene and at least one aromatic hydrocarbon wherein the polymer comprises from 40 to 80% by weight of cyclopentadiene units and from 20 to 60% by weight of at least one aromatic hydrocarbon having a boiling point in the range from 110 DEG to 220 DEG C., selected from the group consisting of alkylaromatic hydrocarbons and tetrahydronaphthalene, said polymers having a mean molecular weight of from 300 to 5000, an iodine number (measured according to DIN Standard 53241, part 2) of from 0 to 60, and a melting point in the range of from 30 DEG to 150 DEG C., and an adhesive containing said binding agent in combination with a rubber or an ethylene-vinylacetate copolymer.

Abstract: 1521248 Modified air-drying alkyd resins HOECHST AG 25 April 1977 [28 April 1976] 17011/77 Heading C3P Modified air-drying alkyd resins are prepared by reacting an alkyd derived from (1) a polycarboxylic acid, (2) a polyhydric alcohol and (3) a monocarboxylic acid having at least 7 C atoms with (4) a copolymer of dicyclopentadiene or alkyl derivative thereof with an unsaturated carboxylic acid or derivative thereof or an unsaturated monohydric alcohol, in one step or by reacting (4) with a preformed alkyd of (1)-(3). The copolymer may contain minor proportions of other monomers, and the alkyd may also incorporate colophony and/or a phenolic resin. Examples describe alkyd resins derived from (1) phthalic acid and/or maleic anhydride, (2) glycerol or pentaerythritol, (3) tall oil fatty acid, linoleic acid, linseed oil, wood oil or soya fatty acid, optionally with benzoic acid, and (4) copolymers of dicyclopentadiene with maleic anhydride, fumaric acid or allyl alcohol. The products may be used in paints.
