Abstract: Unsatd. polyester based binders are made by (1) in a first stage, reacting (a) >=1 single olefinically unsatd. dicarboxylic acid which is free from polymerisable aliphatic multiple bonds; (I); (b) >=1 polyhydric alcohol (II) and (c) >=1 polycyclic norbornane ring cpd. (III) with >=1 functional COOH, OH or amino gp., and (2) in a second stage, reacting the prod. with (d) >=1 condensable acrylic cpd. (IV). The modified acrylated polyesters are esp. useful as binders for UV-curable printing inks. The norbornane ring modification gives prods. with improved processability and improved storage stability in pigmented form. The binders have good pigment wetting characteristics, fast cure times and low viscosity and thus give fast drying high gloss prints with freedom from 'picking' (sticking of paper to the printing rollers).

N-1-4C-alkylol-acrylamide or -methacrylamide is used as (C). The binders are pref. used as printing ink components, esp. insolvent-free printing inks. Binders admixed with fillers can be used as mastics. Binders have high storage stability and high hardening velocity on irradiation with UV light.

They have high storage-stability, e.g. can be stored 6 months without gelling, thickening and changes in viscosity. Hardening rate can be >400 m/min. on irradiation with UV light.
