Abstract: Unsatd. polyester based binders are made by (1) in a first stage, reacting (a) >=1 single olefinically unsatd. dicarboxylic acid which is free from polymerisable aliphatic multiple bonds; (I); (b) >=1 polyhydric alcohol (II) and (c) >=1 polycyclic norbornane ring cpd. (III) with >=1 functional COOH, OH or amino gp., and (2) in a second stage, reacting the prod. with (d) >=1 condensable acrylic cpd. (IV). The modified acrylated polyesters are esp. useful as binders for UV-curable printing inks. The norbornane ring modification gives prods. with improved processability and improved storage stability in pigmented form. The binders have good pigment wetting characteristics, fast cure times and low viscosity and thus give fast drying high gloss prints with freedom from 'picking' (sticking of paper to the printing rollers).

Abstract: In road marking paint based on acrylic resins, up to 50% and pref. 20-30% of the binder comprises polystyrene or a copolymer of styrene with up to 50% of a mono-olefinic comonomer, this (co)polymer having an average mol. wt. of >=20,000. Opt. pigmented polystyrene waste or foamed polystyrenes are pref. although copolymers with monomers such as acrylonitrile, butadiene, styrene etc. are also suitable. The paint dries more rapidly than corresp. systems not contg. polystyrene. The paint has good sub-and weathering-resistance and can be pigmented in the same way as systems without polystyrene.

Abstract: Parent patent discloses prepn. of a radiation-hardenable unsatd. polyester binder from (A) polyhydric alcohol, (B) plain alpha,beta-olefinically unsatd. dicarboxylic acid and/or a polycarboxylic acid which is free from polymerisable aliphatic multiple bonds and (C) acrylic cpd. which can be condensed in. (A), (B) and, (D) a norbornane deriv. contg. >=1 functionally identical COOH, OH or amino gp. are reacted together. The prod. is then reacted with (C). In this Patent of addn. N-1-4C-alkylol-acrylamide or -methacrylamide is used as (C). The binders are pref. used as printing ink components, esp. insolvent-free printing inks. Binders admixed with fillers can be used as mastics. Binders have high storage stability and high hardening velocity on irradiation with UV light.

They have high storage-stability, e.g. can be stored 6 months without gelling, thickening and changes in viscosity. Hardening rate can be >400 m/min. on irradiation with UV light.
