Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided to enable a user watching and/or listening to a program to retrieve supplemental information or supplemental entertainment pertaining to an item just seen or words just heard. The apparatus includes a recognition system which recognizes the user's request and causes its satisfaction to be provided. A dynamically changing dictionary is created from items or keywords extracted from the most recently received program portion. The items or keywords may be contained in closed caption text in a TV signal. Particular items or keywords may be assigned a high priority so that they are maintained in the dictionary for a long duration. The user's request is matched against this continually changing dictionary. Upon recognition of the request, a search is initiated to access, import and deliver to the user the information required to satisfy the request. The information may be presented to the user separately or in coincidence with the normal program using picture in picture or split screen. Alternate embodiments enable preprocessing to obtain and store expanded information for such items and keywords deemed to be of high priority. This speeds up the satisfaction of the user's request for these items or 1 keywords.

Abstract: The films (10) are formed on a substrate (9) by means of chemical vapor deposition where a gas atmosphere containing at least one silane or germane of a higher order is used. The gases forming the gas atmosphere are supplied to a region adjacent to the substrate (9) and an excitation energy is applied to those gases preferably with a glow discharge being generated. At least when the gas atmosphere additionally contains a gas reacting with the silane or the germane respectively the pressure of the reactive gases is kept below 0.133 mbar. … The films (10) formed consist of silicon or germanium respectively, or of compounds or alloys of these elements with oxygen, nitrogen, carbon and boron depending on the nature of the additionally available reactive gases. The films (10) preferably hydrated are useful in semiconducting devices.

Abstract: Allows a video broadcast viewer to pause at anytime while viewing a program, and upon returning to be able to view the intervening segment. The video received during the pause period is stored and available for recall upon user command. The storage medium is circular in so much that the memory, upon becoming filled to capacity continues to write incoming information data over the previously stored data. The storage circuits employs a sequential access storage device and/or a direct access storage device. The storage circuit has a high speed memory input buffer and a high speed memory output buffer to account for the relatively long READ and WRITE access times of the storage device employed. At the end of the pause period, the user can view the stored video. The user has a choice between catching up to the regular broadcast or watching the remaining program video in a delay mode. The stored video may be viewed intermittently or continuously in regular, slow or fast motion, under user direct or remote VCR-type of video function control.

Abstract: A thin film transistor technology where a gate member (3) on a substrate surface (2) is in electric field influenceable proximity to active semiconductor devices in the direction normal to the substrate surface and the ohmic electrodes (32-35) of the active device are parallel with the substrate surface. The gate is formed on the substrate and conformal coatings of insulator (6) and semiconductor (31) are provided over it. A metal is deposited from the direction normal to the surface that is thicker in the horizontal dimension than the vertical so as to be susceptible to an erosion operation such as a dip etch which separates the metal into self-aligned contact areas (32, 33; 34, 35) on each side of a semiconductor device channel without additional masking. Self-alignment of the source, drain and gate can be achieved by insulator additions above and under the gate fabricated without additional masking.
