Abstract: A thin film metal alloy magnetic recording disk has an improved protective overcoat which is both wear resistant and which creates a low level of stiction in a rigid disk file. In a preferred embodiment the overcoat is a film of essentially amorphous carbon or hydrogen-containing carbon with relatively small amounts of additives of iron (Fe), tungsten (W) or tungsten-carbide (WC). The structure of the overcoat is a relatively smooth planar carbon surface with discrete clusters of the additives which project slightly above the smooth carbon surface. The specific additives to the carbon overcoat improve the wear resistance of the disk and permit the sliders to contact the disks in contact start/stop (CSS) operation without damage to any of the disk file components.

Abstract: A lubricant is chemically bonded to an information carrying solid surface by contacting the surface with a diazoketone-terminated polymeric lubricant and decomposing said diazoketone-terminated polymeric lubricant to form a carbene which reacts with the solid surface.

Abstract: A thin film cobalt alloy magnetic recording disk (50) has a texturing layer (52) located between the disk substrate (51) and the top surface of the disk to provide texturing of the disk (50) at the head-disk interface. The texturing layer (52) is made up of generally contiguous clusters of aluminum nitride (AlN) with rounded upper surfaces. The AlN texturing layer (52) is formed by sputtering an Al target in the presence of N2 gas. The subsequently sputter-deposited layers replicate the upper surface of the contiguous AlN clusters, resulting in a textured surface at the head-disk interface. The AlN texturing layer (52) may also be sputter deposited above the magnetic layer (56) in the middle of the protective carbon overcoat (61-62). The density and size of the AlN clusters in the texturing layer (52), and thus the texture of the completed disk at the head-disk interface, are controlled by the amount of N2, the sputtering power and pressure, and the substrate (51) temperature.

Abstract: A thin film of carbon is sputter-deposited as a protective overcoat on the coating of a magnetic recording disk of the type in which the coating includes magnetic particles dispersed in an organic binder. The carbon film exhibits excellent durability and lubricity, thereby eliminating the need to incorporate alumina or other load-bearing particles into the magnetic coating, and eliminating the need for a liquid lubricant on the disk surface.

Abstract: This invention is concerned with a process for bonding a durable low surface energy polymeric coating to a metal or oxide surface. The metal or oxide surface is first treated with an alkali, thereby maximizing the hydroxide ion concentration on the surface, and then in a rigorously dry state with a rigorously dry fluorinated material to form the polymeric coating. The fluorinated material has the formula Rf - O - (CH2)n - SiX3 wherein Rf is a fluorinated lower alkyl group, n is an integer from 2 to 10, and X is a halogen, cyanide or alkoxy group.

Abstract: A thin film metal alloy magnetic recording disk has a protective nitrogen-containing carbon overcoat which is thinner and which exhibits better wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and hardness than conventional carbon overcoats without nitrogen. The nitrogen present in the disk overcoat substantially reduces the film stress. Because of the low stress of the overcoat film there is significantly less likelihood that the overcoat will delaminate, buckle, or otherwise wear away from the underlying magnetic layer during operation of the disk file. This allows for significantly reduced overcoat thickness, thus reducing the head-disk spacing in the disk file. The overcoat, even though significantly thinner than prior art carbon overcoats, exhibits better wear and corrosion resistance than carbon overcoats without nitrogen. In addition, when the carbon overcoat contains hydrogen, the presence of the nitrogen increases the hardness of the film if present in a specific amount dependent on the amount of hydrogen present.

Abstract: A magnetic recording disk has an improved surface film formed on the disk blank. A sputter-deposited surface coating containing nickel, chromium and oxygen (Ni-Cr-O) is formed on a AlMg disk blank, after which a cobalt alloy magnetic layer is formed over the Ni-Cr-O coating and a protective overcoat is formed over magnetic layer. The use of the Ni-Cr-O coating on the disk blank eliminates the need for a wet electroless deposition process for creation of a surface coating and results in an inherent texturing of the subsequently deposited magnetic film and protective overcoat which conform to the surface texture of the sputter-deposited Ni-Cr-O. The disks made with the Ni-Cr-O surface film exhibit a very law static friction force between the air-bearing slider and the disk surface when the disks are used in contact start/stop (CSS) disk files.
