    SOLUTION: The waveform measuring apparatus comprises a digital filter 10 which removes large amplitude change components from an input signal and outputs it while leaving small amplitude noise components as they are, a window generation section 20 which inputs the difference signal between the input signal and the output signal of the digital filter 10 and generates a window indicating the position of an edge part of the difference signal, and a ringing measuring section 30 which extracts a part indicated by the window generated by the window generation section 20 out of the output signal of the digital filter 10 and measures at least a peak-to-peak width of the extracted waveform.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stabilize a servo system in a tape drive system for performing the reading/writing operation of the tape by inserting a tape cartridge into a tape drive independently of the combination of the drive and the cartridge. SOLUTION: The coefficient of a low-pass filter for the servo control of the tape drive is reset in accordance with the inserted tape cartridge for every insertion of the tape cartridge into the tape drive. To put it concretely, a servo pattern being recorded on the tape of the tape cartridge inserted to the tape drive is read out, the frequency of this read out servo pattern is analyzed, a singular point exceeding the prescribed spectral range is detected from the frequency component obtained by this frequency analysis, and then the coefficient of the low-pass filter is set so as to negate the power spectrum of this singular point.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate the linear position signal of a coarse adjustment carriage having an optical polarizing element regardless of the variation of the environment and one- directional position detecting device by providing a light source at one end of the moving range of the carriage and projecting a light beam toward the other end of the moving range, and then, providing the position detecting device near the other end of the moving range. SOLUTION: The coarse position detecting device 300 is fixed to a drive frame 206 near the outer limit of the moving range of a carriage 202 and incorporated with a light source which emits light toward the inner limit of the movement range of the carriage 202 and is composed of a collimating LED 302, etc. A one-dimensional position detecting device(PSD) 304 is fixed to a frame 206 near the inner limit of the moving range of the carriage 202 with the photosensitive surface of the device 304 being faced to the LED 302 and an optical polarizing element 306 is fixed to the carriage 202. When the element 306 is not fixed to the carriage 202, the light from the LED 302 is made incident to the PSD 304 at a reference position A. When the carriage 202 and element 306 approach the inner and outer limits of the moving range of the carriage 202, the light is polarized to a second and third positions (B') across an increasingly long distance. The position of the carriage 202 is calculated by using basic trigonometry.
