Abstract: A liquid crystal display device includes a light shield layer formed on the display electrode (3) at the edge of each display aperture as a thin layer (5) at the upstream edge of the aperture in the rubbing direction of the device, and a thick layer (4) formed on the thin layer at a spacing (L) from the boundary of the display aperture. This leaves a thin light shield over the part of the display cell having reverse tilted liquid crystal molecules, thereby enhancing the quality of the display.

Abstract: JA9-91-044 LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY DEVICE A liquid crystal display device includes a first transparent insulating substrate having a common electrode. A second transparent insulating substrate has gate lines formed in one direction and intersecting data lines in the other direction. Liquid crystal display cells are formed at each cross-point of the gate and data lines and include thin film transistors and display electrodes; a light shielding layer includes an aperture for exposing a display area of each display electrode and liquid crystal material retained between the first and second substrates. The device is characterized in that the light shielding layer of edge of the aperture located at the upper stream of a rubbing direction comprises a thin light shielding layer formed at the periphery of the display electrode for defining edge of the aperture and, a thick light shielding layerhaving an edge positioned on the thin light shielding layer. The present invention improves the quality of a displayed image of a liquid crystal display device which has been degraded by a reverse tilt.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a colour filter comprising a light filtering substance. According to the invention the colour filter is characterised in that the light filtering substance comprises the result of the reaction of a binder polymer with a reactive dye. According to a preferred embodiment of the invention the colour filter is characterised in that the light filtering substance also comprises an organic pigment. The invention also relates to a method of manufacturing a colour filter as above comprising forming a light filtering substance on a substrate. According to the invention the method of manufacturing is characterised by the steps of depositing a solution of a binder polymer and a reactive dye on the substrate and heating the deposited solution so that the binder reacts with and bonds with the reactive dye thereby forming the light filtering substance.

CONSTITUTION:The light shielding layer 10 consisting of the acrylic resin having the crosslinking structure dispersed with carbon black is formed between the picture element electrodes 6 on a glass substrate 2 and on TFTs 8. The acrylic resin having the crosslinking structure can be formed by exposing, developing and etching a negative photoresist consisting of the acrylic resin and a photopolymn. initiator. The light shielding layer 10 which is increased in the thickness of the layer, withstands the high temp., and does not damage the picture element electrodes 6 and the other electrodes at the time of production is obtd. in this way.
