Abstract: JA9-91-044 LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY DEVICE A liquid crystal display device includes a first transparent insulating substrate having a common electrode. A second transparent insulating substrate has gate lines formed in one direction and intersecting data lines in the other direction. Liquid crystal display cells are formed at each cross-point of the gate and data lines and include thin film transistors and display electrodes; a light shielding layer includes an aperture for exposing a display area of each display electrode and liquid crystal material retained between the first and second substrates. The device is characterized in that the light shielding layer of edge of the aperture located at the upper stream of a rubbing direction comprises a thin light shielding layer formed at the periphery of the display electrode for defining edge of the aperture and, a thick light shielding layerhaving an edge positioned on the thin light shielding layer. The present invention improves the quality of a displayed image of a liquid crystal display device which has been degraded by a reverse tilt.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a colour filter comprising a light filtering substance. According to the invention the colour filter is characterised in that the light filtering substance comprises the result of the reaction of a binder polymer with a reactive dye. According to a preferred embodiment of the invention the colour filter is characterised in that the light filtering substance also comprises an organic pigment. The invention also relates to a method of manufacturing a colour filter as above comprising forming a light filtering substance on a substrate. According to the invention the method of manufacturing is characterised by the steps of depositing a solution of a binder polymer and a reactive dye on the substrate and heating the deposited solution so that the binder reacts with and bonds with the reactive dye thereby forming the light filtering substance.

Abstract: The present invention relates to improvements in the frame area of the liquid display panel of a liquid crystal display device, and provides a liquid crystal display device which is enhanced in its blocking ability and the ability of the blocking area to prevent electrostatic failure. A blocking layer 12 is formed in a frame area 1 on TFT array substrate 3. The edge portions of the blocking layer 12 have overlapping areas 14 overlapping the edge portions of each of data lines 10, which are metal layers, with a predetermined overlapping margin d as viewed from a direction perpendicular to the surface of the TFT array substrate 3. An insulation layer 16 is formed on the blocking layer 12 and the TFT array substrate 3. On the insulation layer 16 a semiconductor layer 18 is formed. A plurality of data lines 10 are then disposed on the semiconductor layer 18. The blocking structure thus formed improves the quality of the image display area since it reduces the quantity of light being transmitted from the frame area. Further, the transistor structure formed by the various gate lines, data lines, and blocking lines contributes to the prevention of electrostatic failure.
