Abstract: JA9-91-044 LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY DEVICE A liquid crystal display device includes a first transparent insulating substrate having a common electrode. A second transparent insulating substrate has gate lines formed in one direction and intersecting data lines in the other direction. Liquid crystal display cells are formed at each cross-point of the gate and data lines and include thin film transistors and display electrodes; a light shielding layer includes an aperture for exposing a display area of each display electrode and liquid crystal material retained between the first and second substrates. The device is characterized in that the light shielding layer of edge of the aperture located at the upper stream of a rubbing direction comprises a thin light shielding layer formed at the periphery of the display electrode for defining edge of the aperture and, a thick light shielding layerhaving an edge positioned on the thin light shielding layer. The present invention improves the quality of a displayed image of a liquid crystal display device which has been degraded by a reverse tilt.

Abstract: The specification describes a liquid crystal panel for a twisted nematic liquid crystal that provides the best angle of view in a normal direction to the plane of a glass substrate. Each liquid crystal cell representing a pixel is divided up into two domains, a positive tilt and negative tilt domain. The relationship of the positive tilt and negative tilt domains is equalized in order to orient the molecules in the middle of the cross section of a cell with the desired neutral tilt. The positive and negative tilts are produced by the process of adding a chiral dopant to the liquid crystal, or by a bias-rubbing process, or a combination of both processes. Abstract: JA9-91-007 METHOD FOR DRIVING LCD AND APPARATUS FOR DRIVING LCD AND LCD APPARATUS To provide a liquid crystal display apparatus that simultaneously satisfies both good contrast ratios and good gradation at large viewing angles. A liquid crystal display apparatus in normally-white mode in which gray scale displaying is obtained by providing different applied voltages corresponding to different gray scale levels, respectively, is characterized in that, in a curve showing the relation between an applied voltage and light transmittance ( V-T curve ) the lowest applied voltage is set so as to be shifted in the direction of a monotonously decreasing area of the V-T curve. By shifting the lowest applied voltage in the V-T curve in the direction of a monotonously decreasing area of the V-T curve, brightness or gradation is prevented from being inverted. A liquid crystal display apparatus in normally-white mode in which gray scale displaying is obtained by providing different applied voltages corresponding to different gray scale levels, respectively, characterized in that in a curve showing the relation between the an applied voltage and light transmittance (thereafter called V-T curve) the lowest applied voltage is set so as to be shifted in the direction of a monotonously decreasing area of the V-T curve. By shifting the lowest applied voltage in the V-T curve in the direction of a monotonously decreasing area of the V-T curve, brightness or gradation is prevented from being inverted.

Abstract: A liquid crystal display device includes a light shield layer formed on the display electrode (3) at the edge of each display aperture as a thin layer (5) at the upstream edge of the aperture in the rubbing direction of the device, and a thick layer (4) formed on the thin layer at a spacing (L) from the boundary of the display aperture. This leaves a thin light shield over the part of the display cell having reverse tilted liquid crystal molecules, thereby enhancing the quality of the display.

Abstract: The invention relates to a twisted nematic liquid crystal display which has the best viewing angle at a position directly opposite to the display panel. A single pixel of the display panel comprises a normal tilt domain and a reverse tilt domain of molecules of the liquid crystal. In a preferred embodiment the size of the normal tilt domain is equal to that of the reverse tilt domain.
