    Abstract: 1511819 Collapsible container for centrifuge INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 6 Oct 1976 [21 Nov 1975] 41547/76 Heading B2P An annular, flexible, collapsible centrifuge container for fluid, e.g. blood, separable into fractions according to density comprises a plurality of radially separated expansible fluid channels 11, 23 in the form of concentric interrupted annuli, an inlet and at least one outlet at opposite ends of each channel, the inlet to one end of the innermost channel 23 being in the form of a tube 31 extending radially outward from within the central opening 7 of the annular container, and each outlet being in the form of a tube, e.g. 19, 21 or 29, extending radially inward from the other end of the respective channel to the central opening 7, the other end of each channel, except the outermost 11, being connected to the one end of the next channel. The container is formed from two annular pieces 1a, 1b of flexible plastics, e.g. P.V.C., sealed together by heat and pressure to form fluid-tight welds at 3, 5, 9, 13 and 15. The tubes 19, 21, 29 and 31 are moulded, welded or sealed through the weld 9. The radially inward region of the channel 23 is connected to the inlet end of channel 11 by a radial channel 25. In use, the container may be placed in the rotor of a centrifuge as described in Specification 1509667, the rotor cover having recesses to receive the channels 11 and 23 when expanded. Whole blood to be processed may be introduced into the inner channel 23 through the tube 31. Red cells are removed through the tube 29. Platelet-rich plasma is led through channel 25 to the outer channel 11 from which platelet-poor plasma and platelet concentrate are withdrawn through tubes 19 and 21 respectively. In a modification, instead of providing the channel 25 to connect channels 11 and 23, a further outlet tube may extend from the radially inward region of the portion 27 of annular channel 23 to the central opening 7 and be connected to a further inlet tube which extends from the opening to the adjacent end of the channel 11.

    Abstract: A centrifuge structure for automatically separating a plurality of aliquot samples of blood plasma for testing from an initial sample of whole blood. A centrifuge bowl is provided with a bottom surface sloping upwardly and outwardly and joined to a vertical circular outer wall. A plurality of radially extending vertical septa or partitions divide the outer portion of the bowl into a plurality of radially extending chambers. Each of these chambers is provided with an exit port in the bottom surface. Whole blood placed in the bowl is forced radially outward by the centrifugal action of the bowl when rotated, and separates into different fractions. The selected fractions are moved to the vicinity of the exit ports by selectively changing the rotational velocity of the centrifuge and are then valved to other containers by opening valves connected to the exit ports.     Abstract: An improved centrifuge assembly comprising a channeled rotor assembly and a ring-like fluid container disposed in the channel, whereby the centrifugal separation effects in the fluid container are determined by the geometry of the channel in the rotor. The fluid container is preferably formed from semirigid plastic material in the form of a tube having a rectangular cross section and is considered a disposable item to be discarded after a single use. The rotor assembly preferably includes a removable filler piece or center piece formed from a single piece of material, such as rigid plastic, as by molding, dimensioned to form, with the wall of the centrifuge bowl, a circular channel having dimensions appropriate to receive the semirigid container, which is suitably bent and placed in the channel. Fluid connections are provided from each end of the container to an axially located multichannel rotating seal. The connections lie in a plurality of radial slots in the filler piece. Alternatively the entire assembly may be molded as a single entity, with a suitable channel and fluid line grooves being cast therein.

    Abstract: CENTRIFUGE FLUID CONTAINER A fluid container particularly useful in a centrifuge system for separating the various fractions in blood. The container comprises two circular sheets of flexible material, having central openings therein. The outer peripheral edges are sealed together, as well as annular-like portions extending outwardly from the central opening. Concentric-like inner and outer annularlike channels are thus formed at the outer peripheral portion of the assembly. Radial arcuate portions are sealed off, thereby providing interrupted annularlike channels. At a first end of the inner annular-like channel, an inlet tube is provided, extending outwardly from the central opening and communicating with the first end of the inner annular-like channel. At the outlet or second end of the inner annular-like channel, there is provided a radially extending inter-channel connector, which comprises a sealed off portion extending between the adjacent ends of the inner and outer annular-like channels. Also at this outlet end of the inner channel, a radially enlarged region is provided, acting as a first collecting chamber, into which an outlet tube is sealed, extending from the inner opening. A second collection chamber is provided at the outlet end of the outer annular-like channel. A plurality of outlet tubes extend radially outward from the center of the bag to open within the second collection chamber at different radial distances. Through these outlet tubes, selected separated portions of the fluid are withdrawn from the bag.

    Abstract: Apparatus for processing blood, and particularly for washing blood cells, including a centrifuge head in which is arranged a flexible blood container connected by a rotating seal to tubing which permits the entrance and exit of wash liquid and supernatant. The flow of liquid in the tubing is controlled by valve arrangements which are operable to permit the entrance of wash liquid and removal of supernatant liquid. The flexible container fits over a flexible membrane also arranged inside the centrifuge head about a solid central core. The volume defined by this membrane and the core communicates via a passage in the core with a fluid reservoir by means of a control pump which allows fluid to enter and exit from the volume defined by the membrane. During operation the unwashed blood may be entered into the container or blood bag before or after the bag is placed in the centrifuge. The centrifuge is spun until cells have settled against the outside wall at which time the valve arrangements and the control pump are activated such that fluid is pumped into the centrifuge under the volume defined by the membrane thereby forcing a supernatant to flow out to a collect container. The centrifuge is then stopped and the wash solution enters the blood container through another valve arrangement, thereby allowing the removal of fluid from the volume inside the flexible membrane. Removal of the wash liquid is accomplished by the same process of removal as the removal of supernatant previously described. Provisions are made for electrical control of all the operations including an agitate operation in which the centrifuge is spun in alternate directions for only a few revolutions or goes through alternate accelerate-decelerate cycles while rotating in the same direction to thereby agitate the material in the blood bag or flexible container during the time that a wash solution is entering. The circuit arrangements are such that a high degree of flexibility in the programming of the various operations can be obtained.
