Abstract: To provide a disk drive, a manufacturing method thereof, and a disk-drive controller which are capable of improving yield without increasing costs so significantly. When track-following control is performed, HDC 20 detects the current position of a read/write head 2, based on the reproduced output of a servo sector from a channel unit 5, and makes a calculation of servo data by employing both an integral parameter corresponding to a target track to be read onto a RAM 1 and the detected current position of the read/write head 2.

Abstract: A disk device and a method are described for reassigning data areas (e.g. sectors) which minimize the reduction in the data transfer rate when alternate data areas are used to replace defective areas. The disk device uses a plurality of data zones with spare areas allocated in each data zone. An alternate area is allocated (a) in the spare area within the data zone where the error occurs and (b) at an angular position offset more than a predetermined angle from a position of the data in which the error occurs. The offset angle allows the device time to seek to the alternate area, read the alternate area and seek back to the area following the defective area within a single rotation of the disk.

At this time, it comprises a step for executing a first error restoring procedure 103, a step for executing a first GMR evaluating procedure 109 for evaluating the performance of the GMR sensor when the operating error is not restored in the first error restoring procedure and a step 117 for impressing a reset pulse to the GMR sensor in accordance with the first GMR evaluating procedure.

SOLUTION: When the recording/reproducing operation by a recording/ reproducing part 4 is not normally completed, an error recovery process is executed by a control part 3. In the case where the error is not recovered even by this process, the recording/reproducing operation is re-executed against the region where the error is generated, after the standby of a specified time. When the error is still not recovered, the region where the error is generated, is tentatively registered as the error region.

SOLUTION: In a control means having a feed-forward system and a feedback system, a control model for generating reference position data yr from a feed- forward control signal Uff0 is divided into an original control model 22 and a correction filter 23. Also, the gain correction of the feed-forward control signal Uff0 is operated by a gain correcting means 24, and a corrected feed- forward control signal Uff is generated. The reference position data yr are inputted to a feedback controller 25, and a feedback control signal Ufb being the output of the feedback controller 25 and the feed-forward control signal Uff are inputted to an object 26 to be controlled. The coefficients of a correction filter 23 and a gain correcting means 24 are corrected according to a head orbit based on the actual seek operation.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate generation of thermal asperity and to avoid generation of error by making head vibration have a directional component approaching the disk surface. SOLUTION: When an error is generated, a vibration signal from a means 52 is superposed on a signal from a controller 43 by a direction of HDC and supplied to a VCM driving means 45. And a head 20 is positioned at a desired position according to thermal asperity position. By providing the VCM 46 with a vibration signal, a head assembly starts rolling movement centering the joint point with a dimple. And the head assembly generates vertical vibration with a frequency equivalent to the given vibration signal frequency, and eliminate the thermal asperity on the disk.
