Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To execute detailed analysis and prediction by an outside controller in reponse to a true request from an application, and to issue a look-ahead request to an auxiliary storage device such as an HDD. SOLUTION: An HDC card 21, which stores data and is connected to an HDD device 22 having a cache memory, is provided with an access request trace part 61 for directly tracing a true access request from an application program to be executed by a host from the application program, a speculative request deciding part 62 for deciding a speculative request estimated in the future based on the traced true access request, and an HDC 31 for issuing the decided speculative request to the HDD device 22.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the performance of an information recording/reproducing device using a GMR(giant magnet resistance) sensor. SOLUTION: This method aims at the restoration of an operating error generated in an information recording/reproducing device including a storage medium, a head using a GMR sensor, an actuator arm for mounting the head and locating the head on a prescribed position on the front surface of the storage medium and a control part for controlling the operation of the actuator arm and read/write operation. At this time, it comprises a step for executing a first error restoring procedure 103, a step for executing a first GMR evaluating procedure 109 for evaluating the performance of the GMR sensor when the operating error is not restored in the first error restoring procedure and a step 117 for impressing a reset pulse to the GMR sensor in accordance with the first GMR evaluating procedure.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a restoration time prediction method, a restoration time prediction device and a hard disk drive capable of effectively utilizing power restoration time required for restoration from a standby state and achieving the acceleration of the entire system provided with the hard disk drive. SOLUTION: When a host originates a request for releasing the standby state to this hard disk drive in a standby state, the power restoration time required for the hard disk drive to be restored from the standby state so as to become usable is predicted (S2). Then, the predicted power restoration time is reported to the host (S3). Since a host system recognizes the time required for power restoration, a schedule is made so as to execute a task to be ended within the time interval before the hard disk drive is started and the schedule of the task of the entire system inside the host system is optimized. Thus, the acceleration of the entire system provided with the hard disk drive is achieved.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording and reproducing device, storage device, computer system, data processing method, and program transmitting device which can effectively protect data stored in a storage medium and a recording disk. SOLUTION: When the number of times of the retrial until a successful readout of data is a prescribed number of times or more, the data are once saved in a spare sector SS, the data are overwritten in a data sector DS in which the data are stored originally. Furthermore, at the time of saving data in the spare sector SS and overwritting the data in the data sector DS, pointer information on a RDM table stored in a reserved area RA which is a nonvolatile memory is rewritten suitably, respectively.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently hold data in respective cache memories by holding data which are common to a high-order and a low-order cache memory or decreasing the number of pieces of data held in the high-order and low-order cache memories in common. SOLUTION: A computer system is equipped with an HDC card 21 which is connected to an extension bus 20 and an HDD drive 22 which is connected to an HDC card 21. The HDC card 21 is equipped with a disk cache (high-order cache memory) and the HDD drive 22 is equipped with a disk cache 54 (low- order cache memory). The HDC card 21 and HDD drive 22 send and receive selection information for selecting swap modes of the cache memories when the system is started and selects mutually different swap modes according to the sent and received selection information.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate generation of thermal asperity and to avoid generation of error by making head vibration have a directional component approaching the disk surface. SOLUTION: When an error is generated, a vibration signal from a means 52 is superposed on a signal from a controller 43 by a direction of HDC and supplied to a VCM driving means 45. And a head 20 is positioned at a desired position according to thermal asperity position. By providing the VCM 46 with a vibration signal, a head assembly starts rolling movement centering the joint point with a dimple. And the head assembly generates vertical vibration with a frequency equivalent to the given vibration signal frequency, and eliminate the thermal asperity on the disk.
