    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a microminiature disc drive employing a tab base of sheet metal and plastic conformable to CompactFlash (trade mark) type II form factor and interface specifications. SOLUTION: A base 10 supports the components of a disc drive, i.e., a spindle motor with a loaded disc, a voice coil motor actuator fixed with a read/write head, and preamplifier/write driver electronic module. The composite base is a metal plate 12 having a flange extending on the periphery, and a plastic flame 14 surrounding the metal plate 12 while wrapping the flange. Since the metal plate 12 supporting the spindle motor and the voice coil motor actuator of the disc drive is made of a substance having high permeability and low coercive force, it can form a part of the magnetic circuit of the spindle motor and the actuator.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate the detection of a position signal error by determining the mutual time interval of plural prescribed magnetic flux transition couples in a servo pattern, generating a speed invariant position signal and detecting the position signal error so as to correlate a servo read head signal and the prescribed servo pattern recorded on a recording medium. SOLUTION: In a tape/head converting direction capable of reading the servo pattern, a servo read head 26 is relatively moved at the time of moving a tape straightly to the servo read head 26 along with the lengthwise direction of a center line 30 on a servo track. The servo read head 26 detects the servo pattern of a magnetic flux transition, generates an analog servo read signal and supplies it through a servo signal line 34 to a signal decoder 36. The signal decoder 36 processes the servo read signal, generates the position signal and supplies it to a servo controller 40.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To more easily detect a position signal error by setting a width of a servo read head to be smaller than half a width of a narrowest data read head when the width is defined as a size of the head in a direction perpendicular to a conversion direction. SOLUTION: A relative move of a servo read head 26 in a conversion direction of a tape head whereby the servo read head can read a servo pattern is generated when a tape 20 moves straight with respect to the servo read head 26 in a longitudinal direction of a center line 30 of a servo track. The servo pattern of a magnetic flux transition is detected, and a servo read head signal of an analog form is generated and supplied to a signal decoder 36. The signal decoder 36 processes the signal and supplies via a position signal line 38 to a servo controller 40. The servo controller 40 monitors a position signal from the signal decoder 36 and generates a control signal necessary for the head to reach a desired position.

    Abstract: A head stack assembly for a data recording disk drive has a carriage on which a coil is mounted. The carriage has a first surface and a second surface. A first head gimbal assembly is mounted on the first surface, and a second head gimbal assembly is mounted on the second surface. A datum member is formed on each of the surfaces of the carriage. The datum member is used to position each of the head gimbal assemblies on their respective surfaces. The datum member has two pins that engage apertures in the head gimbal assemblies. A pivot member is located in a separate aperture between the pins such that the head stack assembly is balanced at the center of the pivot member.

    Abstract: THE INVENTION IS A TAPE REEL BRAKE WHICH IS MOUNTED IN A WELL IN THE TOP OF A TAPE REEL HUB. THE WELL IS INSIDE THE TAPE BEARING SURFACE OF THE HUB. THE BRAKE IS MOUNTED TO BE COMPLIANTLY BIASED AWAY FROM THE BASE OF THE WELL. THE HUB IS SEATED AGAINST A FIRST INSIDE SURFACE OF A TAPE CARTRIDGE HOUSING. THE HUB AND BRAKE ARE SEATED IN THE TAPE CARTRIDGE SUCH THAT TEETH ON THE PERIPHERY OF THE BRAKE ARE BIASED AGAINST THE OPPOSITE INSIDE SURFACE OF THE CARTRIDGE HOUSING ABOUT THE PERIPHERY OF AN OPENING THEREIN. THE BIASING OF THE BRAKE AGAINST THE OPPOSITE INSIDE SURFACE BOTH PREVENTS THE ROTATION OF THE REEL AND SHIELDS OUT DUST WHEN THE TAPE CARTRIDGE IS REMOVED FROM A TAPE DRIVE. TO ROTATE THE REEL, A TAPE DRIVE CLUTCH ENTERS THE OPENING IN THE OPPOSITE INSIDE SURFACE AND DEPRESSES THE BRAKE INTO THE WELL TO MATE WITH A SMALLER DIAMETER PORTION OF THE HUB OR A RECESSED PORTION OF THE BRAKE. THE HUB IS ALWAYS MAINTAINED ON THE INSIDE SURFACE OF THE HOUSING, THEREBY ELIMINATING LATERAL MOTION WHICH COULD DISRUPT THE TAPE PATH.(FIG 14)
