    Abstract: An integrated magneto-resistive sensor for detection of magnetic bubble domains. The sensor is located on the chip in which the bubble domains propagate and can be an integral part of the propagation circuitry. Any material exhibiting a magnetoresistive effect can be used, and permalloy is a preferred material. The sensing element can be made very small, and has a length which is usually about equal to a bubble domain diameter.

    Abstract: A magnetoresistive recording head for writing information onto a magnetic tape or similar recording medium and for reading such information, wherein the thin magnetoresistive element is protected from tape wear by employing a magnetically permeable element between the tape and the magnetoresistive element so that recording can take place without proximity between tape and sensor. Additionally, the magnetoresistive element is surrounded by the yoke of the recording head in such a manner that the element is effectively out of the magnetic field of view of the magnetically recorded data until such data is directly under the magnetic element. Consequently, the resolution of the recording head is substantially increased.

    Abstract: A magnetic transducer and suspension assembly suitable for use in both contact recording and in winchester-type applications is described. A generally rectangular elongated flat suspension member includes a vertical-type inductive read/write transducer formed integrally with the suspension member and is embedded in one end of the suspension member. The vertical inductive transducer is suitable for vertical recording applications. The transducer vertical magnetic pole tip and magnetic yoke structure are formed at one end of the suspension member with the vertical pole tip extending to and exposed at an air bearing surface formed on the lower surface of a slider-shaped protrusion extending from the lower surface of the end of the suspension member. The integral transducer/suspension assembly can be adapted for either flying above the recording media or for use in continuous contact with the recording media. The air bearing surface is formed on the lower surface of a wear pad. The fabrication of the transducer/suspension assembly is adapted to be performed at the wafer level.

    Abstract: Y0984-097 MULTIPLE COILS FOR REDUCTION OF STRAY MAGNETIC FIELDS IN DISK FILE ACTUATORS A linear disk actuator is disclosed incorporating a magnetic circuit for reducing stray magnetic fields in the region of the disks and recording heads of a magnetic recording disk system. The moving part of the actuator is provided with a plurality of coils mounted thereon, at least two of which are energized simultaneously and in magnetically opposing relationship to reduce the amplitude of the stray magnetic fields. Movement of the actuator is achieved by both energized coils interacting with a set of alternating poles positioned on the stationary part of the actuator.

    Abstract: A structure provides variable electromagnetic property (variable, resistance, capacitive, or other variable impedance or other variable electromagnetic property) contrast on the surface marking servo tracks on data storage media, Such media include magnetic or optical storage disks and tapes. The media can be conductive metallic or nonmetallic and can be composed for example of poorly conductive media, dielectric media, or semiconductive media. The variable electromagnetic impedance can vary in the optical, electrical or other portions of the electromagnetic spectrum. A very small variation of the thickness of the protective layer above the magnetic recording medium is employed to mark the servo track information of the medium. Information to be detected by means of a capacitive sensor can be recorded in the protective layer above or below the magnetic recording or optical storage medium. For example, a thin film metallic protective layer 0.07 micrometers thick can be patterned with about 0.02 micrometers of the protective layer. For a plated disk, the top 0.02 micrometers of the protective layer can be patterned. A pattern for providing a variable impedance for representing data can be formed subtractively by sputter etching, or additively formed by a lift-off process or by deposition through a mask, or by the oxidation of or nitriding of materials such as Al, Si or valve metals. This system provides capacitive or other variable impedance contrast for position signals on conductive metallic media for magnetic disks and tapes by means of a very small amount of modulation of the thickness of the protective layer above the magnetic recording medium. Optionally, the protective layer may be planarized by subsequent oxidation, or the use of an additional layer.

A generally rectangular elongate flat suspension member includes a ring-type inductive read/write transducer formed integrally with the suspension member and is embedded in one end of the suspension member. The ring-type inductive transducer is suitable for horizontal recording applications. The transducer magnetic poletips and magnetic gap are formed and positioned such that the poletips and gap are essentially co-planar with the air bearing surface of a slider-shaped protrusion extending from the lower surface of the end of the suspension member adjacent a moving media during operation. The air bearing surface presented to the disk has most of its area covered with a wear layer to minimize wear of the slider surface and poletips.
