Abstract: An apparatus for code division multiple access (CDMA) wireless communication comprising a receiver configured to receive a CDMA signal that includes a desired traffic signal and a second signal, the desired traffic signal being spread with a desired traffic spreading code and the second signal being spread with a second spreading code; means for generating a second signal cancellation component including means for generating a second signal strength by despreading the CDMA signal based on the second spreading code; means for generating a second signal cancellation factor by selectively combining the second signal spreading code and the desired traffic spreading code; and means for combining the second signal strength and the second signal cancellation factor to generate the second signal cancellation component; means for generating a despread desired traffic signal by despreading the CDMA signal based on the desired traffic spreading code; and means for combining the despread desired traffic signal and the second signal cancellation component to cancel second signal noise from the despread desired traffic signal.

Abstract: The present invention balances the amplitude and phase of a received QPSK signal that may have been corrupted during transmission. The system determines the amplitude of the I and Q symbols of a received signal, compares them, and applies a correction to one or both channels to correct for amplitude imbalance. For phase imbalance, the system calculates the cross-correlation of the I and Q symbols which should average to zero. A correction factor is derived from the cross- correlation and applied to both channels, returning the phase cross-correlation to zero. The output from the system is a signal corrected in both amplitude and phase.

Abstract: The invention provides a spread spectrum communication system for maintaining an initial transmit power level of a communication station during periods of inactivity. The system comprises a first station (501) and a second station (502), the initial transmit power level of which is maintained, wherein the first station generates an automatic power control signal by comparing a measured noise power level in a communication channel and an estimated system transmit power level and the second station occasionally transmits a spread spectrum signal whilst in an inactive state and receives the automatic power control signal to adjust an initial transmit power level thereof.

Abstract: Outer loop/weighted open loop power control controls transmission power levels in a spread spectrum time division duplex communication station. A first communication station (110) transmits a communication to a second communication station including target adjustment information generated at the first station on the basis of measured error rates of communications from the second station to the first station. The second station receives the communication and measures its received power level. Based on in part the received communication's power level and the communication's transmission power level, a path loss estimate is determined. A quality of the path loss estimate is also determined. The transmission power level for a communication from the second station to the first station is based on in part weighting the path loss estimate in response to the estimate's quality and based on the receive target adjusted by the target adjustment information transmitted from the first station.
