    Abstract: An absorption spectroscopy apparatus includes a sample cell (12) having an axis, a side wall (14) having at least one curved reflective surface (16) arrayed about the axis and facing inwardly with respect to the cell (12) such that a beam of energy directed against a predetermined location on the reflective surface (16) is reflected back and forth off the reflective surface (16) and remains in substantially the same plane while inside the cell (12), at least one port (18, 20) in the sidewall (14), a fluid inlet, a fluid outlet, and at least one source/detector reflector (26, 28) having a curved profile in a plane extending perpendicular to the axis of the cell (12). The reflector (26, 28) is positioned with respect to the port (18, 20) to reflect energy through the port (18, 20) and against the predetermined location on the reflective surface (16).

The three material layers are adapted to transfer energy from the semiconductor material layer to the outer side of the metallic material layer and emit electromagnetic energy in a narrow band of wavelengths from the outer side of the metallic material layer.
