Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain an unsaturated alcohol in high yield and selectivity, by hydrogenating an unsaturated fatty acid under pressure in the presence of a catalyst prepared by adding preferably an alkali metallic halide as the third component to zinc and a rare earth element metal. CONSTITUTION:An unsaturated fatty acid or an ester thereof, e.g. methyl oleate, is hydrogenated under pressure in the presence of a catalyst composition prepared by adding an alkali metallic halide, preferably KI, KCl, KF or KBr, to Zn and a rare earth element metal at 100-300kg/cm hydrogen pressure and 200- 350 deg.C to give the aimed compound. La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Lu, etc. of the lanthanum series, preferably La or Ce, may be cited as the rare earth element metal, and a mixture, e.g. Misch metal, may be used. The amounts of the Zn, rare earth element metal and alkali metallic halide based on 100pts.wt. Zn are as follows: 1-100pts.wt. rare earth element metal and 1-100pts.wt. alkali metallic halide.
