Abstract: There are provided a water dispersion for ink-jet printing which contains a water dispersion of particles of a vinyl polymer or a polyester-based polymer which contain a colorant (B), and a water-insoluble organic compound (A) except for aliphatic acid derivatives; a water-based ink containing the water dispersion; a print obtainable by printing images or characters with the water-based ink; and a process for producing the water dispersion. Also, there are provided an ink set for ink-jet printing containing two or more kinds of inks having different colors from each other wherein the inks each contain a water dispersion of particles of a vinyl polymer or a polyester-based polymer which contain a colorant (B), and a water-insoluble organic compound (A) except for aliphatic acid derivatives; and a process for producing a print using the ink set. The water-based ink can provide multi-order color images or composite black images which exhibits a high optical density and is excellent in gloss and image clarity.

Abstract: A process for preparing a carboxylic acid-based polymer comprising the steps of (A) a first polymerization reaction step comprising introducing an aqueous solution of monomers containing an alpha -unsaturated carboxylic acid or a salt thereof, an aqueous solution containing a hydrogensulfite, and a gas containing oxygen into a flow mixer to polymerize the monomers; and (B) a second polymerization reaction step comprising further polymerizing a reaction product containing the unreacted monomer obtained in the first polymerization reaction step. There can be stably and productively prepared a carboxylic acid-based polymer having a high quality with suppressed coloration and containing a reduced amount of impurities even if the amount of gas containing oxygen used in the initiation of the polymerization reaction is remarkably reduced.

Abstract: There are provided a water-based ink for ink-jet printing which not only satisfies a high optical density but also is excellent in gloss and image clarity upon printing on a coated paper; a water dispersion used in the water-based ink; and a process for producing the water dispersion. The present invention relates to a water dispersion for ink-jet printing comprising colorant containing water-insoluble polymer particles which is obtainable by mixing at least two kinds of water-insoluble polymer particles (A) and (B) which are different in average particle size from each other, wherein said polymer particles (A) have an average particle size of 70 to 200 nm and said polymer particles (B) have an average particle size of 15 to 110 nm with the proviso that the average particle size of the polymer particles (A) is larger than that of the polymer particles (B), and a difference between the average particle sizes of the polymer particles (A) and (B) is 10 nm or more; a process for production of the water dispersion; and a water-based ink containing the water dispersion.

Even when the amount of an oxygen-containing gas used in initiating the polymerization is extremely reduced, high-quality carboxylic acid polymers which are little discolored and little contain impurities can be produced at high productivity.
