Abstract:
A lubricant composition comprising an oil of lubricating viscosity and an oil-soluble branched-chain hydrocarbyl-substituted arenesulfonic acid salt, wherein the arenesulfonic moiety has at least one hydrocarbyl substituent which is a highly branched group as defined by having a Chi(0)/Shadow XY ratio greater than about 0.180, exhibits good dynamic frictional performance.
Abstract:
The perception of objectionable odors generated from lubricants is minimized by including in said lubricant a thiazole compound and an odor mask.
Abstract:
A composition of a hindered phenol antioxidant which is substituted in the 4 position by a CH2CH2C(O)OR group, where R is an alkyl group of 2 to 6 carbon atoms, and a dispersant or a detergent, is a useful additive package for lubricant compositions.
Abstract:
A saligenin derivative such as the magnesium salt of a polynuclear bridged phenol product is useful as an additive for a lubricating composition. Up to 11 hydrocarbyl-substituted phenolic aromatic units are bridged by -CH2- or -CH2OCH2 groups, and additional terminal -CHO or -CH2OH substituents may be present. At least one aromatic ring contains a hydrocarbyl substituent of 1 to 60 carbon atoms, and the total number of carbon atoms in all such hydrocarbyl groups should be at least 7.
Abstract:
A sulfurized alkaline earth metal (e.g., calcium) dodecylphenate is prepared by reacting (i) dodecylphenol with (ii) calcium hydroxide or calcium oxide in an amount of about 0.3 to about 0.7 moles per mole of dodecylphenol charged and (iii) an alkylene glycol in an amount of about 0.13 to about 0.6 moles per mole of dodecylphenol charged; and reacting the product of the first step with sulfur in an amount of about 1.6 to about 3 moles per mole of dodecylphenol charged; and thereafter optionally reacting the product with additional calcium hydroxide or calcium oxide and with carbon dioxide so as to form an overbased phenate. The product thus prepared has reduced levels of monomeric dodecylphenol.
Abstract:
Lubricating oils containing an additive formulation including at least one sulphonate, saligenin and salixarate detergent provide improved wear performance and decreased sulphur and phosphorus emissions.
