    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for preparing an excellent overbased gel and to provide coatings and other materials contg. the gel. SOLUTION: An overbased calcium carboxylate gel is prepd. by a process comprising (I) the step of treating an about 8-30C carboxylic acid or its reactive equivalent with calcium oxide or hydroxide in an equivalent ratio of about (2/1)-(10/1) in the presence of an org. solvent; (II) the step of converting the mixture from step I into a carbonate at about 50-100 deg.C in the presence of an accelerator system contg. water and a 1-8C alcohol under the condition that the alcohol/water molar ratio is substantially const. and is such that the viscosity of the mixture is kept at about 1,000 cP or lower during the whole step II and the amt. of the alcohol is adjusted, esp. when in the presence of calcium hydroxide, so that this viscosity is kept during the whole step II; (III) the step of further adding water and the alcohol and causing the mixture from step II to gel at about 25-100 deg.C provided stripping is not conducted at between step II and step 11; and optionally (IV) the step of removing water and the alcohol.

    Abstract: The present invention is directed to a process for preparing a gelled overbased calcium carboxylate which involves carbonating a carboxylic acid of 8 to 30 carbon atoms in the presence of a promoter system consisting of water and an alcohol of 1 to 8 carbon atoms, such that the mole ratio of alcohol to water is substantially constant and is such that the viscosity of the reaction mixture during carbonation step does not exceed 1 pascal second (1000 centipoise). This process prevents excessive thickening of the reaction mixture in a manufacturing unit during carbonation and affords ample time to complete the process of carbonation without premature crystallization of the calcium carbonate formed during overbasing.
