Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a communication system, especially, radio communication system to use the strongest coding/modulating system to the quantity of applied payload bits. SOLUTION: Concerning this system, the quantity of payload bits applied in channel quality index (CQM) and block is considered. A transmitter uses one of (k) kinds of coding/modulating systems in the case of transmitting data on a radio data network. First of all, the transmitter selects a coding/modulating system C, for example, as a C/I measuring function (215). Continuously, the transmitter calculates the number B of blocks required for transmitting a data packet group D while using the coding/modulating system C (220). Besides, the transmitter calculates the number of blocks required for transmitting the data packet group D to each coding/modulating system stronger than the selected coding/modulating system C.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wireless global positioning system that can decide a position of a wireless mobile communication device without GPS capability without disturbing reception of a satellite signal. SOLUTION: The wireless positioning system determines the location of a wireless mobile communication device from reliable position measurements and wireless network downlink measurements. The wireless network downlink measurements obtained are then used in conjunction with a database for pattern matching or contour matching. The difficulty of building and maintaining that database is alleviated by using those network downlink measurements associated with the reliable position measurements to populate the database, such as GPS measurements or those obtained through enhanced based positioning technique (EOTD). The increased database accuracy subsequently improves the quality of position location measurements from the wireless network.

Abstract: In a wireless data network, such as a General Packet Radio Service (GPRS ) network, a transmitter uses one of k coding/modulation schemes for transmitting data. The transmitter initially selects a coding/modulation scheme, C, as a functi on of carrier-to-interference ratio (C/I) measurements. The transmitter then calculates the number of blocks, B, required to transmit a number of data packets, D, using the coding/modulation scheme C. In addition, the transmitter calculates the number of blocks required to transmit the number of data packets, D, for each coding/modulation scheme th at is stronger than the selected coding/modulation scheme C. The transmitter final ly selects that coding/modulation scheme that results in transmitting the number of dat a packets D in B blocks using the strongest coding/modulation scheme. As a result, each block is transmitted using the strongest coding/modulation scheme available.

Abstract: Methods for signaling information to a group of users in a communication network supporting a broadcast-multicast service are described, in which one or more indicator bits of a sequence may be assigned to indicate transmission of signaling information that is related to the group. The sequence may be transmitted to the group on a first channel, with the signaling information related to the group being transmitted on a second channel.

Abstract: A method of triggering registration of a mobile station in a network supporting broadcast multicast services employs registration triggers based on flow conditions and frequency conditions. For example, a registration message may be generated based on a change in frequency, from a first frequency to a second frequency, that is monitored by the mobile station. If the second frequency is not known to the network based on flow identifier information previously registered by the mobile station with the network, a registration to the network is triggered. By sending a registration, the network may page a mobile station on a single, given frequency, since the registration message indicates the mobile station's presence on that given frequency.

Abstract: A scheduler and a method for scheduling transmissions to a plurality of users (105) in a communication network assigns a higher target minimum throughput for receiving a next transmission to a user based on a quality of service (QoS) class of the user. A token count that tracks the user's achieved performance relative to a target minimum throughput Is determined for each user in given timeslot, and a weight is determined for each user based on one or more of the token count and a current rate requested by the user. A user having the highest weight as determined by a weight function is scheduled to be served the next transmission. User priority for scheduling may be downgraded if an average data rate requested by the user is less than the target minimum throughput.

Abstract: A method for scheduling transmissions to a plurality of users in a communication network determines a satisfaction metric and a dissatisfaction metric for each user in a given timeslot that is to be used for a next scheduled transmission to one of the users. Each user is assigned a weight based on a value of at least one of the user's satisfaction metric, the user's dissatisfaction metric and a rate requested by the user. The use having the highest weight is selected to be served the next scheduled transmission in the given timeslot.
