Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently perform an automatic repetition request by making an identification number correspond to at least one unit of data to be transmitted. SOLUTION: On a receiver side, variables V(N) and V(R) are monitored. The variable V(N) shows a maximum sequence number, by which all the bytes of previous data are received without errors. V(R) shows the sequence number of subsequently new data byte, which is expected to be received from a transmitter. A variable VT(N) is a value of V(N), which is received the latest from the receiver in a control message sent from the receiver to the transmitter. A variable VT(R) is the latest value of the variable V(R) transmitted to the transmitter from the receiver in the control message. The variable V(S) is the sequence number allocated to the byte of next data, which is to be transmitted to the receiver from the transmitter.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method that efficiently identifies a size of each DCH in a payload part of a data frame in a node of the UMTS UTRAN(Universal Mobile Telecommunications System-Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network) to exchange data with other node in a UTRAN network. SOLUTION: In the UMTS UTRAN wireless system, a wireless network element (e.g. a base station) exchanges information with other wireless network element (e.g. a wireless network controller) via a data frame (uplink or down link). Each data frame includes the payload part including a header part and a QoS class indicator field. For example, an 8-bit spare extension field of an UTRAN data frame (uplink or down link) is used to carry a 4-bit payload type indicator and a 4-bit QoS class indicator.

Abstract: A scheduler and a method for scheduling transmissions to a plurality of users (105) in a communication network assigns a higher target minimum throughput for receiving a next transmission to a user based on a quality of service (QoS) class of the user. A token count that tracks the user's achieved performance relative to a target minimum throughput Is determined for each user in given timeslot, and a weight is determined for each user based on one or more of the token count and a current rate requested by the user. A user having the highest weight as determined by a weight function is scheduled to be served the next transmission. User priority for scheduling may be downgraded if an average data rate requested by the user is less than the target minimum throughput.

The sequence number associated with the most recent data that has been received successfully and the sequence number expected with the next new data message to be received are examined to determine the minimum size sequence number necessary to unambiguously identify to the transmitter incorrectly received data that must be retransmitted in a later message. The receiver provides the transmitter with the sequence number associated with the last successfully received byte of data and the sequence number associated with the next expected byte of data. The receiver communicates this information to the transmitter using a NAK control message. The transmitter then uses the sequence number of the next byte of data to be transmitted and the information received in the control message from the receiver to determine the smallest number of bits necessary to represent the sequence numbers for both data transmissions and the retransmission of data that was not received properly by the receiver.
