Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a cold neutron lens based on refraction optics. SOLUTION: A cold neutron refraction lens system is constituted of an array of thin lenses. In a lens holder 18, 5 concave lens elements 11 are placed. The number of the lens elements 11 depends on the neutron focal distance of each element 11. Total focal distance is f=f0 /n, where n is the number of elements in the array and f0 is the focal distance of a single lens. The lens material has a small negative relative refraction factor n-n0 , where n0 is refraction factor (=1). Therefore, focusing element should be concave lenses and not convex lenses normally used in focusing wavelength of light. A preferable material have cold neutron absorption (determined as absorption of neutron of 10 angstrom) at 10 barn or less and restricted interference scattering cross sectional area for neutron of 2200 m/sec to be 3 fm or more.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an MEMS(microelectromachining system) type inductor capable of monolithic integration. SOLUTION: An inductor 102 is constituted of a conductive loop 104, whose one or more coils are suspended above the upper part of a substrate 100 by at least two conductive supports 110 and 114, including a passive self-assembly means. In an example, the passive self-assembly means includes a layer, having a high level specific stress provided on the conductive supports 110 and 114. A stress layer is accumulated on the structure layer (for example, polysilicon) of the conductive supports 110 and 114. When the structure of the supports of the inductor is 'released' in manufacture process by removing a certain sacrificial layer, the stress layer contracts and residual distortion can be reduced. As a result, an upward force is impressed to the free edge of the supports to which the conductive loop belongs. Thus, the supports 110 and 114 and the loop can be separated and lifted up from the substrate 100.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To vary inductance by changing the geometrical relationship between a ground plane and a loop. SOLUTION: An inductor 100 is configured such that a differential motion occurs in a space between a loop 110 and a ground plane 104. In this case, the loop 110 is fixed on a base material 102. Meanwhile, on the ground plane 104, a free end 105 can move by a vector 106 but is restrained at a fixed end 103. Moreover, since the loop 110 cannot move when the ground plane 104 makes a motion, a differential motion occurs in a space between the loop and the ground plane and the space is changed. Additionally, the ground plane 104 is made of a magnetic material or a material provided with magnetism by other methods.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multi-port variable capacitor based on an MEMS(micro electromechanical system). SOLUTION: A circuit element is provided with a movable plate 308 supported on first and second coplanar fixed electrodes. A bias power source 324 is electrically connected to the first fixed electrode 316 and the plate 308, and applies a bias voltage V1 across the electrode 316 and plate 308. An AC signal carrying line is electrically connected to the fixed second electrode 322 and plate 308. When the bias voltage V1 is applied, an electrostatic attracting force acts between the first electrode 316 and plate 308. Consequently, the plate 308 moves downward toward the electrode 316 and the distance between the plate 308 and electrode 316 is reduced. Accordingly, the capacitance of a multi-port variable capacitor 302 increases. In this capacitor 302, the bias voltages and signals are electrically separated (isolated) from each other.

Abstract: A micromechanical variable/tunable inductor (100) is disclosed. The present inductor comprises at least two elements (104,110) capable of supporting spatial electromagnetic coupling and means for varying a geometrical relationship thereof. Varying the geometrical relationship between such elements varies the inductance of the inductor. In some embodiments, the geometrical relationship that is varied is the spacing between the two elements. The spacing is varied by creating a differential movement between such elements. In further embodiments, the present invention comprises resonant circuits incorporating such variable inductors, and oscillators including such resonant circuits.

Abstract: A micromachined xyz stage, and microscopes utilizing such a stage, are disclosed. The xyz stage includes co-planar x- and y-drive means linked to a sample stage. Such x- and y- drive means are operable to position the sample stage in an x-y plane. The xyz stage further includes z-drive means operable to moves the sample stage out of the x-y plane. The z-drive means can be implemented by suspending a flat-plate electrode over the sample stage using hinged plate supports. As a voltage is applied across the plate electrode and the sample stage, an electrostatic force is generated, causing the sample stage to move towards the plate electrode. The hinged plate supports facilitate assembly of the z-drive means, in addition to providing support for it in its assembled configuration. By incorporating an optical fiber, the aperture of which has be drawn down to submicron size, a near-field scanning optical microscope can be formed. By forming a micromachined tip on the xyz stage, a scanning tunneling microscope or an atomic force microscope can be formed.

Abstract: Optical switches utilizing electrostatically-driven actuators formed from micro machined plates are disclosed. Under an applied voltage, a movable plate moves toward a fixed plate or a conductive region of an underlying support. The switches further include a mechanical linkage from the actuator to an optical device. The displacement of the movable plate generated at the actuator is transferred, via the mechanical linkage, to the optical device. The optical device, which is positioned in close proximity to optically-aligned spaced optical fibers, is movable into and out of an optical path defined by the optical cores of the optical fibers by the action of the actuator. An "in-plane" optical switch includes an actuator having two vertically-oriented electrodes, which generates a substantially horizontally-directed displacement of the movable plate and the linked optical device. An "out-of-plane" optical switch includes an actuator having at least one horizontally-disposed suspended above a conductive region of an underlying support. The actuator generates a substantially vertically-directed displacement of the movable plate and the linked optical device.
