Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical connector for optical cable. SOLUTION: An optical connector which terminates an optical cable 10 including a plastic optical fiber 11 enclosed by a protective jacket 12 includes a housing which has an external latch 201 which is to be fixed to an adapter. This latch 201 is constituted as a cantilever having its fixed end and is placed toward the front end of the housing. The connector includes a cable holding structure which is attached to the jacket of the optical cable so that the plastic optical fiber 11 may be connected to a related optical device without using a ferrule. One cable holding structure is made of a metal and includes a guide tube pressed or insert-molded to the rear end of a plastic housing 40.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow an optical circuit board to be easily connected to and disconnected from a back plane. SOLUTION: Optical devices are arranged along the side end (311) of the board (310) and adjusted so as to be connectable mutually to the same number of optical connectors (200) that are arrayed longitudinally or laterally on the back plane. Each optical plug is held on a holder (120), which is retained on the back plane (100) with a clip (110). Each optical connector is a plug including a ferrule (24), which seals in an optical fiber and which projects from one end of the plug. Each end-mounting optical device contains a jack receptacle (410 and 510) at the front end, possessing a cavity (401 and 501) formed for accepting the optical plug. The jack receptacles are all similarly shaped. Each cavity also contains a boss (421 and 521) for receiving the ferrule. The plugs and the jack receptacles are arranged in the manner that they are engaged and not connected with each other.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily process the terminal of a plastic optical fiber to have a low loss by locating the terminal of an optical fiber so as to touch a solvent liner to transfer the solvent to the terminal of the optical fiber, and polishing the terminal of the optical fiber by the generated surface tension. SOLUTION: A removable cover 101 covers a solvent liner fixed to a base 102, and is also adhered to the base 102. A lift tub 103 facilitates the removal of the removable cover 101. The solvent liner is dipped in a solvent for polishing the terminal of an optical fiber by dissolving the surface layer of the terminal of the optical fiber causing a surface tension for automatically polishing the optical fiber. The cover 101 is pulled and separated, and the plastic optical fiber is brought into contact with the solvent liner to transfer the solvent to the terminal of the optical fiber. When the terminal of the optical fiber is returned to its general non-flexible state, the polishing work is ended.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for efficiently producing a gradient refractive index optical fiber having a necessary optical transmission band. SOLUTION: A dopant is diffused by heating a plastic optical fiber up to temperature at which a high-rate diffusion state is caused while the transmission band of the plastic optical fiber is measured after a stepped refractive index plastic optical fiber is extruded or drawn. When a specific transmission band is measured, the plastic optical fiber is put back to ambient temperature immediately. Further, the plastic optical fiber is further heated gradually to balanced temperature right below the above temperature needed for the high-rate diffusion state. Once the temperature reaches the equilibrium temperature, further heating is carried out, the temperature is raised to the temperature needed for the high-rate diffusion, and the transmission band is inspected.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make an optical fiber terminal have a low-loss boundary with a light source, detector or another fiber by ablation the terminal of a plastic optical fiber by using an excimer laser. SOLUTION: The terminal of the optical fiber 106 is finished by ablating the terminal of the optical fiber 106 to remove a material containing cracks and interstices. An aperture 102 and lenses 103 and 104 are used to condense the light released by a laser 101 on the optical fiber 106. The light is condensed and is superposed on the optical fiber 106 and is condensed to the center of the optical fiber 106. The cracks and interstices are generated by the first cutting of the terminal of the optical fiber 106 and the oblation is resulted in consequence of the absorption of the UV light from the laser 101. Energy is absorbed only in the initial micron of the terminal surface of the optical fiber 106, by which the induction momentary removal of the material is induced. About one micron of the fiber is removed with each 3 to 5 pulses from the laser.

Abstract: Fabricating graded index plastic optical fiber by diffusing a high molecular weight dopant within a step index plastic optical fiber after the step index plastic optical fiber has been drawn from a preform using a conventional draw tower in a first embodiment. Also, the step index plastic optical fiber may be fabricated by extruding one material circumferentially around another material, e.g., by use of a concentric nozzle. The dopant is diffused after the drawing or extruding of the step index plastic optical fiber by heating the plastic optical fiber to a temperature that causes a high rate of diffusion state while measuring the transmission bandwidth of the plastic optical fiber. When the predetermined specified transmission bandwidth is measured, the plastic optical fiber is immediately returned to an ambient temperature. In addition, the plastic optical fiber may be gradually heated to an equilibrium temperature that is just below the temperature required to produce the high rate of diffusion state. Once the equilibrium temperature has been achieved, additional heating is carried out to raise the temperature to that required to produce the high rate of diffusion and the transmission bandwidth is tested. In a second embodiment of the invention, the preform is initially heated for an amount of time that will allow the diffusion process to be partially completed. After the plastic optical fiber has been drawn, the remaining diffusion is accomplished by testing for the specified transmission bandwidth. Similarly, a partially diffused plastic optical fiber may be extruded.
