    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To substantially prevent the both of the mutual reaction of optically active monomers and a matrix precursor during hardening and the inhibition of the following polymn. of the monomers by making a matrix polymer and a polymer produced from the polymn. of the one kind of plural optically active monomers compatible with each other. SOLUTION: This optical product is composed of a three-dimensionally crosslinked polymer matrix and one kind of plural optically active monomers and makes at least the one kind optically active monomer contain a part which is substantially independent of the polymer matrix other than a monomer functional group. Then, the matrix polymer and a polymer produced from the polymn. of the one or plural optically active monomers are made compatible with each other. A polymn. reaction carefully considered for the formation of the matrix polymer is, e.g. cationic epoxy polymn. cationic vinyl ether polymn., cationic alkenyl ether polymn. cationic allene ether polymn. or cationic ketene acetal polymn.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an improved recording medium in which a hologram shows desirable properties by including a fixing step to subject the recording medium to fixing after irradiation of light so as to allow the residual photopolymerizable component to react. SOLUTION: A data image is stored to an optical medium 14 by the interference of coded signal beams 20 and reference beams 22. A hologram is produced by the interference, and the hologram is trapped in the medium as a pattern of variable refractive indices. While irradiating a matrix of the medium with light, one or more photopolymerizable components are polymerized, and then after irradiation, the medium is fixed to obtain the permanent hologram. By this method, different from a conventional medium containing a perforated matrix, Bragg detune caused during forming the hologram or Bragg detune due to the temp. change are small so that the life on the recording face of the recorded hologram or fidelity of recording can be improved.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process where a passivation layer is formed at a facet by, when an inductive layer is deposited, allowing a cleavage plane to be exposed to specific plasma in a deposition chamber, so that the inductive layer is deposited on the cleavage face, without exposing a laser bar to the atmosphere. SOLUTION: After completion of manufacturing a multi-layer ware which was mesa-etched and metalized, a line is engraved in the surface of wave, so that individual semiconductor chip is regulated (110), to be cleaved along surface, thus defining a laser bar. Then after a jig with the laser bar mounted is assigned in a reactive chamber, the inside of the chamber is evacuated to 10 Torr or below, and the laser bar exposed to passivation plasma of H2 S. Hydrogen in the plasma removes inherent oxide from a facet surface, and sulfur in the plasma combines to Ga and As, thus a surface state density of the facet decreases. After exposed to H2 S plasma, a protective inductive layer is deposited on the facet.

In contrast to previous media containing porous matrices, the invention allows readable holograms to be written in a medium without the need for solvent processing steps subsequent to irradiation. Due to the rigid nature of the matrix, polymerization and/or diffusion during formation of each individual hologram induces only a small level of Bragg detuning. Temperature fluctuations similarly induce only a small Bragg shift. Improved archival life of recorded holograms and improved fidelity of read-out, as well as improved optical elements, are thereby attained. And the avoidance of solvent processing makes the process of recording holograms far easier than in previous porous matrix-based media.
