    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new sol-gel process using only very small amounts of a stabilizer such as TMAH(tetramethylammonium hydroxide) and a gelation agent such as methyl formate. SOLUTION: In this production, by using a single stabilization/gelation agent which is capable of initially, stabilizing or assisting in stabilizing a liquid dispersion and then, being converted in situ into a gelation agent for inducing gelation of the liquid dispersion, the respective required amounts of a conventional stabilizer and a conventional gelation agent, both of which are required for bringing about both the stabilization effect and the gelation effect, can be reduced. Accordingly, this sol-gel process is superior to a conventional solgel process. The initial stabilization effect of the stabilization/gelation agent enables a remarkable reduction in required amount of an undesirable stabilizer such as TMAH. Further, since the stabilization/gelation agent itself is converted into a substance capable of contributing to gelation, only a very small amount of a conventional gelation agent such as methyl formate is required.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an improved recording medium in which a hologram shows desirable properties by including a fixing step to subject the recording medium to fixing after irradiation of light so as to allow the residual photopolymerizable component to react. SOLUTION: A data image is stored to an optical medium 14 by the interference of coded signal beams 20 and reference beams 22. A hologram is produced by the interference, and the hologram is trapped in the medium as a pattern of variable refractive indices. While irradiating a matrix of the medium with light, one or more photopolymerizable components are polymerized, and then after irradiation, the medium is fixed to obtain the permanent hologram. By this method, different from a conventional medium containing a perforated matrix, Bragg detune caused during forming the hologram or Bragg detune due to the temp. change are small so that the life on the recording face of the recorded hologram or fidelity of recording can be improved.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a substance comprising a material exhibiting periodicity by introducing a liquid dispersion of nanoparticles having a specified particle diameter into the crystals of a template comprising colloid crystals to form a mutually connected structure and then removing the colloid crystals. SOLUTION: A template of colloid crystals comprising polystyrene, polymethyl methacrylate and silica is prepared. The average grain diameter of the colloid crystals is about 100 nm to 5 μm. A liquid dispersion of nanoparticles whose average diameter is about 1 nm or 30%, preferably about 10%, of the average diameter of the colloid crystals is introduced into the colloid crystals to form a coherent structure from the nanoparticles. The nanoparticles comprise titania, silicon, germanium or gallium phosphide. Colloid crystals are then removed from the resulting composite material by heating or acid etching to obtain the objective photonic band gap substance exhibiting periodicity.

In contrast to previous media containing porous matrices, the invention allows readable holograms to be written in a medium without the need for solvent processing steps subsequent to irradiation. Due to the rigid nature of the matrix, polymerization and/or diffusion during formation of each individual hologram induces only a small level of Bragg detuning. Temperature fluctuations similarly induce only a small Bragg shift. Improved archival life of recorded holograms and improved fidelity of read-out, as well as improved optical elements, are thereby attained. And the avoidance of solvent processing makes the process of recording holograms far easier than in previous porous matrix-based media.
