Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phased array antenna equipped with an active or a beam forming array and an active edge element which is capable of transmitting and/or receiving radio signals. SOLUTION: A phased array antenna includes an active or a beam forming array and an active edge element capable of transmitting and/or receiving radio wave signals. The edge element has two functions; one is to serve as an active element used for transmitting and/or receiving radio wave signal, and the other is to offer uniform impedance to an edge element of the antenna array. The active edge element is capable of transmitting and/or receiving radio waves, operating at the same frequencies with the array antenna or the frequencies different from those of the array antenna. The active edge element can be set different in polarity from the array element.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve problems of a conventional patch antenna by providing a nonconductive frame supporting resonators. SOLUTION: The nonconductive frame 124 supports the resonators 116, 118 of the patch antenna 100. The frame 124 can support the resonators 116, 118 without making holes in the resonators 116, 118 so as to solve a problem of generating an electric field component with an undesired polarity. In addition, the frame fixes the resonators 116, 118 at an area with a small current density thereby avoiding an undesired disturbing component form being generating in the radiation pattern. In one embodiment of this invention, the frame 124 is provided with a lip-like projection with an outer circumference meshing with an edge of a supply board 130 and then the frame 124 is fitted to the supply board 130 thereby.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve problems of a conventional patch antenna by providing a nonconductive frame supporting a resonator. SOLUTION: The nonconductive frame 124 supports the resonator 116 of a patch antenna assembly 100. Since the frame 124 supports the resonator 116 without the need for making holes to the resonator 116, a problem of generating an undesired wave with polarized electric field can be avoided. Moreover, the frame 124 grips the resonator 116 at an are with a low current density thereby preventing further disturbance from being caused to a radiation pattern. The frame 124 may be provided with posts 128 used to be mounted onto a supply board 130 without the use of additional components such as screws.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a patch antenna having sophisticated beam width characteristics. SOLUTION: As a first example, this antenna is provided with a patch element and a ground plane separated from the patch element by a first dielectric layer. Further, this antenna has a signal feeder separated from the ground plane by a second dielectric layer and the signal feeder is shielded from the patch element by the ground plane. The signal feeder is electromagnetically coupled with the patch element through an aperture placed on the ground plane across this signal feeder and the ground plane functions as a limited plane to the aperture. Further, as another style, the beam width of the antenna is controlled by controlling the position of a reflecting plate at the back of the signal feeder. Thus, the method is effective for various wireless systems in three-sector configuration with controllable wide beam width.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a patch antenna having an impedance converter. SOLUTION: Since the impedance converter connecting one end to a patch element and connecting the other end to a feeder through an earth face is used, impedance matching can be attained without being affected by the physical restriction of the patch element. In one mode, the patch element is formed on the surface of a 1st substrate, the earth face is formed on the surface of a 2nd substrate, the earth face is separated from the patch element by plural substrate layers, the converter is embedded between the substrate layers laminated between the patch element and the earth face, and a conductive via hole connects one end of the converter to a feeding point formed on the patch element. The patch antenna has also a coaxial feeder having an outer conductor connected to the earth face and an inner conductor connected to the other end of the converter and capable of transmitting a signal to/from the patch element through the converter.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a slot antenna for controlling beam width to be transmitted. SOLUTION: This antenna 100 having pairs of slots in a row for controlling beam width to be transmitted is provided with at least one pair of slots 118 and 120 applied by a microstrip 122, and electric field barriers 140, 142, and 144 are arranged in parallel with the slots. The electric field barriers are extended between a front panel 110 and a rear panel 112 of the slot antenna. Distances among the electric field barriers are used for matching the antenna with specific transmission frequencies or reception frequencies, and the distances among the slots are used for controlling the beam width of energy to be transmitted. In one configuration, the electric field barriers are obtained as conductors arranged with a series of narrow intervals, and in the other configuration, the electric field barriers are obtained as conductive strips.

Abstract: A non-conductive frame (124,126) supports the resonators (116,118) in a patch antenna assembly (100). The frame supports the resonators without making holes in the resonators and thereby avoids the problem of creating unwanted electric field polarizations. Additionally, the frame grasps the resonators in areas of low current density and thereby avoids creating additional disturbances in the radiation pattern. The frames may also include posts (128) that are used to attach the frames to the feedboard (130) without using additional components such as screws.

Abstract: An antenna (70) is described that comprises an antenna having a patch element (72) fabricated onto a substrate (74), a ground plane (82), and an impedance transformer (80) between the patch element and the ground plane. The patch element is electrically connected to a first end of the impedance transformer, and a feed line (84) is electrically connected to a second end of the impedance transformer through the ground plane. The use of the impedance transformer allows impedance matching to be accomplished without being limited to the physical limitations of the patch element. According to a further aspect of the invention, a patch element is fabricated onto a first substrate surface and a ground plane is fabricated onto a second substrate surface, the ground plane separated from the patch element by a plurality of substrate layers. An impedance transformer is embedded between abutting substrate layers between the patch element and the ground plane, and an electrically conductive via connects a first end of the impedance transformer to a feed point on the patch element. The antenna further includes a coaxial feed having an outer conductor electrically connected to the ground plane and an inner conductor electrically connected to a second end of the impedance transformer, such that a signal is carried between the coaxial feed and the patch element through the impedance transformer.
