Abstract: An edge connector (10) is adapted for use with a printed circuit board (11) having a mating edge (41) and a plurality of contact pads (40) on opposite sides of the board adjacent the edge. The connector includes an elongated dielectric housing (12) having a slot (20) for receiving the mating edge of the printed circuit board. A plurality of terminals (26) are mounted on the housing along the slot. Each terminal includes a pair of side support portions (28a, 28b) fixed to the housing generally near opposite sides of the slot, a cross brace portion (30) extending between the side support portions, a terminating portion (32) projecting below the cross brace portion and a spring contact portion (34) projecting above the cross brace portion for engaging one of the contact pads on the printed circuit board. The spring contact portion extends from one side of the board across the slot for engaging a contact pad on an opposite side of the printed circuit board. The terminals are oriented in an alternating array along the slot whereby the spring contact portions alternatingly engage contact pads on opposite sides of the printed circuit board. The housing includes an area (44) supportingly engaging the underside of the cross brace portion to resist rotational movement of the terminal as the printed circuit board biases the spring contact portion transversely of the slot.

Abstract: A SIMM socket with a metal latch (120) for retaining a SIMM therein is provided. The socket includes a housing (160) having a SIMM receiving slot (166) and a plurality of terminals (30) with contact beams extending into the slot. The SIMM is inserted into the slot in a first angular alignment with minimal insertion forces, and is rotted into a second alignment for achieving high quality electrical connection with the contact beams of the respective terminals. A metal latch (120) is provided for releasably retaining the SIMM in the preferred angular alignment within the socket. The latch is stamped and formed from a unitary piece of metallic material and includes a housing engaging portion (122) mounted around a mounting post (174) of the housing and a deflectable SIMM engaging portion (130). The housing includes walls for controlling the types and ranges of deflection that are permitted for the SIMM engaging portion.

Abstract: An electrical connector of low-insertion force type comprises a male plug (1) having pin terminals (2) and a female socket (3) having contacts (5). Each pin terminal (2) has straight slant opposite surfaces (6, 7) extending from the opposite ends (D, E) of its flat nose (B) at a same angle. The flat nose (B) is positioned with its center somewhat beyond the center axis (C) of the pin terminal, thereby placing the opposite slant surfaces (6, 7) asymmetrical with respect to the center axis (C) of the pin terminal. Thus, the insertion force of each pin terminal (2) reaches its peak value on one side of the pin terminal earlier than on the other side as shown at S1 and S2 in Fig. 4. This permits substantial reduction of the insertion force overall. The straight inclination of surfaces (6, 7) can be easily shaped with precision. This facilitates mass production of pin terminals (2) of the same insertion force characteristics.

Abstract: A connector (10) for an edge card (102) has a plurality of contact terminals (50) spaced apart in an elongated connector housing (12). Each terminal has a general U-shape contact portion (56) which extends transverse through a contact cavity slot (18). The contact portion is horizontally cantilevered from a vertical cantilevered positioning portion (54) which is disposed within a recess (28) associated with the contact cavity (24), and is further displaceable therein in response to insertion of an edge card into the connector card slot (18). The insertion of the edge card into the card slot causes the terminal to partially deflect within the recess to bring an opposing contact surface into reliable contact with the edge card.
