Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain an apparatus for selectively imparting material in pattern to a paper web without contact with the paper web under movement by putting the charges of compressed air into an orifice and releasing the fluidized material in the orifice by the charges of the compressed air to a substrate. CONSTITUTION: A head box 22 houses cellulose pulp supplied by a conduit 23 communicating with a pulp source and has endless forming wires 24 right thereunder. The pulp is made to flow by slices 25 from the head box 22 to the peak surfaces of the wires 24 through the slices 25, by which a pulp web 21 is formed. When the pulp web 21 is once formed, the pulp web passes under a venturi slot imparter 40. This imparter 40 deposits the additional fluidized material on the pulp web 21 by the intermittent charges of the compressed air. The compressed air is supplied from an air reservoir 41 to the venturi slot imparter 40 and the fluidized material is forcibly fed from a storage tank 42 through a conduit 43 to the venturi slot imparter 40.

An overlapping paper 69 is wound onto the outside to allow the carrier and the tobacco flavored material to cross a current toward in the cavity at the time of heating by the electric heater. Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide a method for applying cellulosic slurry to banded smoking article wrappers with repetitive patterns. CONSTITUTION: Utilizing a screen roller 60 having a surface 51 including alternating regions of a screen section 64 separated by a spacer 66, cellulosic slurry is applied onto a pulp web 21 moving along a path to form repetitive patterns. Utilizing a slurry coater 46 including a slurry feeder 47, a knife 48 and a slurry return 49, a continuous thin layer of the slurry is applied to the surface 51 of the screen roller 60, and the slurry is allowed to adhere to only the screen section 64 by the vacuum force provide by a vacuum port 54. The roller 60 is rotated so that the adhered slurry moves to a region 51B adjacent to both the web 21 and a pressure port 52, and then the pressure port 52 forces the internal surface of the screen section 64 to release the slurry from the screen section 64, applies the released slurry to the web 21 and forms the repetitive patterns. The preferable widths of the screen section and the spacer range are 2-8 mm and 12-20 mm, respectively.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To improve a mechanism for applying a tension imparting adhesive to the tape advancing to the mandrel of a spiral tube winding machine. CONSTITUTION: One or more tapes 12a, 12b, 12c, 12d, 12e pulled toward the mandrel of a tube winding machine are passed on vacuum chambers 24a, 24b, 24c, 24d, 24e to receive tension. An adhesive is applied to one or more tapes present at a place near to a vacuum chamber. If the tube winding machine is stopped by any reason, the vacuum chamber holds the adhesive coated tapes to a tensioned state and these tapes move to be detached from the contact with an adhesive coating member. The lengths of the respective tapes being in contact with the adhesive coating member are adjusted to adjust the amt. of the adhesive applied to the tapes. In order to accelerate the effect of the adhesive, the respective tapes are heated after the coating with the adhesive.
