Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide a smoking article composed of specified constitution and having the appearance and feeling of a cigarette for efficiently heating a flavor imparting aerosol radioactive material by heat gas and radiation generated by the air passing through a carbonaceous heat source. CONSTITUTION: On an end on an opposite side for communicating fluid with the mouthpiece end of this smoking article, an active element 11 composed of a non-combustible cylindrical hollow sleeve 22, a heat source 20 provided with a fluid passage 206, a flavor floor 21 and a spacer means 101 for supporting the flavor floor 21 is provided. At the time, the heat source 20 is provided on the end on the opposite side of the mouthpiece end inside the sleeve 22 and the flavor floor 21 is supported by the spacer means 101 with an interval from the heat source 20 in the inside on a mouthpiece end side. Further, the part adjacent to the heat source 20 of the sleeve 22 is made air permeable so as to support the combustion of the heat source and at least a part is made of metal. Also, the part adjacent to the flavor floor 21 of the sleeve 22 is made air non-permeable so as to prevent the combustion of a material in the flavor floor 21.

Abstract: An electrical smoking system (21) comprising a cigarette (23) and an electric lighter (25), wherein the cigarette (23) comprises a tubular tobacco mat (66) partially filled with material tobacco (80) so as to define a filled tobacco rod portion (60) and an unfilled tobacco rod portion (90). The cigarette (23) and the lighter (25) are mutually arranged so that when the cigarette (23) is received in the lighter (25), the electrical heater element (37) of the lighter (25) at least partially superposes at least a portion of the filled tobacco rod portion (60). The cigarette (23) and the lighter (25) are also mutually arranged so that when the cigarette (23) is received in the lighter (25), the free end (15) of the cigarette (23) is occluded. The cigarette (23) includes a zone of perforations (12, 14) at a location along the fitted tobacco rod portion (60), with the cigarette being free of perforations along the unfilled tobacco rod portion (90).

Abstract: A removable cigarette (224') is manufactured for use in a smoking system which includes a lighter which has electrical heating means disposed in permanent cavity for delivering a flavored tobacco response to a smoker. To manufacture the cigarette a carrier web (259') is provided which has regions (261) of tobacco flavor material. Adhesive regions (261A) are applied from an adhesive applying station (327) to the surface of the carrier web (259') to form spaced regions of adhesive (261A) in between spaced regions of flavor material (261). A filter station (329) attaches filters (333,335) to the adhesive regions (261A) and a wrapping station (337) wraps the web (259') around the filters (333,335) to form a continuous rod of alternating regions of filter and tobacco flavor material. Finally, individual removable cigarettes (224') are formed by severing the continuous rod at a severing station (339).

Abstract: A method of making Cu, Zn, and/or Cu/Zn alloy nanoparticles subjects one or more targets to laser energy to form a vapor and condenses the vapor to form nanoparticles having an average particle size of less than 20 nm. The optional application of an electric field results in nanoparticles with aspect ratios greater than 1.0. The target(s) can be a single target or separate targets comprising a mixture of copper, zinc, and/or copper/zinc. When separate targets are used, the laser beam can be split to form two separate beams each of which is made incident upon one of the targets. The nanoparticles can be formed in a chamber having an inert atmosphere or a reactive atmosphere and a convection current is created in the chamber by maintaining the top plate at a lower temperature than the bottom plate.
