Abstract: This invention relates to the treatment of substrates such as paper with material in repetitive patterns. The substrate web (2) passes beneath an applicator (8) in which orifices for discharging the material onto the web are moved along a path crossing that of the moving web preferably at an angle. The orifices may be formed in an endless belt (9) the lower traverse (28) of which constitutes the floor of a container (23) for the material. The treatment patterns made with this invention can be altered by changing apparatus operating parameters.

Abstract: A cigarette comprises a filter and a tobacco rod. The filter includes a capsule having opposite end walls with flavored adsorbent particles in the enclosure of the capsule. The end walls are perforated so that mainstream tobacco smoke passes through the capsule during the smoking process to thereby modify the characteristics of the smoke. Overall the capsule enables more exact filling of adsorbent particles and more control of flavor per cigarette.

Abstract: A removable cigarette (224') is manufactured for use in a smoking system which includes a lighter which has electrical heating means disposed in permanent cavity for delivering a flavored tobacco response to a smoker. To manufacture the cigarette a carrier web (259') is provided which has regions (261) of tobacco flavor material. Adhesive regions (261A) are applied from an adhesive applying station (327) to the surface of the carrier web (259') to form spaced regions of adhesive (261A) in between spaced regions of flavor material (261). A filter station (329) attaches filters (333,335) to the adhesive regions (261A) and a wrapping station (337) wraps the web (259') around the filters (333,335) to form a continuous rod of alternating regions of filter and tobacco flavor material. Finally, individual removable cigarettes (224') are formed by severing the continuous rod at a severing station (339).
