Abstract: A method and appratus are provided for communicating a sequence of digital information words. The information words are separated into a sequence of odd information words and a sequence of even information words. The separated odd and even information words are time-displaced from each other by a predetermined amount. The odd information words are encoded in an error-correcting code, and the even information words are separately encoded in a similar error-correcting code. The encoded time-displaced odd and even information words are combined into a transmission block, and this transmission block is transmitted or recorded. In one embodiment, the information words are encoded by generating an error-correcting word in response to the odd information words and by generating an error-correcting word in response to the even information words. The respective error-correcting words are interleaved with the odd and even information words. To recover the original information words, the transmission block is received and the odd and even information words are decoded so as to correct errors therein. The time displacement between the decoded off and even information words are removed. If an information word contains an uncorrected error therein, a correct information word is approximated therefor by interpolating adjacent decoded odd or even information words so as to approximate a correct even or odd information word, respectively. A corrected sequence of information words formed of the decoded and approximated information words is recovered.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To maintain a high recording efficiency, by adding a redundant bit of >=2 bits having different combinations to the input data of one block and then delivering the signal having the sum value of the digital sum closest to 0 among the modulated signals. CONSTITUTION:The input data having plural bits formed into one block is processed so as to add the redundant bit to the first 2 bits in each block by the redundant bit generators 2a-2d and multiplexers 3a-3d. The output containing the redundant bit of the multiplexer is supplied to the modulators 4a-4d of the run length limited code, and each modulated output is supplied to the memories 5a-5d plus digital sum counters 6a-6d each. The output of the counter is supplied to a comparator 8. The circuit 8 detects the sum value of the digital sum that is closest to 0 among the counters 6a-6d in the timing of the end of a block, and controls the multiplexer 7 to deliver the modulated data having the sum value of the digital sum closest to 0 to a terminal 9.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To increase the error correction ability, by performing coding possible for error correction to the words having PCM signal and those adjacent to these and transmitting and recording these words separately in timing. CONSTITUTION:One channel PCM signal in which one sample is converted into one word, is separated into 2N sets of a plurality of series at a parallel circuit 2. The series consisting of even number words is fed to an error correction encoder 4A, and that of odd number is fed to an error correction encoder 4B via a delay circuit 5. The words obtained from the encoders 4A, 4B are fed to a detection encoder 6, where the error detection code is generated. These words and the error detection code constitute one transmission block and are recorded on magnetic tape. Further, the suitable selection of amount of delay of the circuit 5 can increase the error correcting ability at the edition point of magnetic tape.

By the error correcting code, correction can be executed up to two word errors in one block, the error correcting code is combined with a multiple interleave, and therefore, even for the receiving data for which random errors are comparatively many, a sufficient error correcting capacity can be obtained.

CONSTITUTION:At the output of a parity interleaver 1, PCM data series of 12 channels appear, and words in them are supplied to an encoder 2 one after another to form the 1st check words P12n and Q12n. Further, 12 PCM data series and two check word series are supplied to an interleaver 3. One word each in an output data series of this interleaver 3 is supplied to an encoder 4 to form the 2nd check words R12n and S12n, and a circuit 10 adds a parity bit to each word. This data is applied to the input of en error correcting decoder, and a checker 11 makes a word-by-word parity check. On the basis of a syndrome, a decoder 17 makes an error correction, and a decoder 19 generates an error syndrome by data included in the 1st error correction block and a parity check matrix, thereby correcting the error.
