Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive and rugged scanner which can be easily replaced with another by preparing an optical module and a PCB(printed circuit board) having a stationary electric connector, which is attachably connected to a coupler that electrically connects the optical module fixed to the PCB to the PCB. SOLUTION: An optical module and a PCB 212 are prepared. The optical module includes an optical scanner 206 which scans a mark to be read, an optical detector which detects the light reflected from the mark that is currently read and also supplies the data signal shown by the mark and a movable electric coupler. The PCB 212 has a stationary electric connector which is attachably connected to a coupler that is fixed to the PCB 212 and electrically connects the optical module to the PCB 212, and contains an electric circuit fixed to the PCB 212 for control of the optical module. The electric circuit prepared on the PCB 212 includes a drive device that drives the scanner 206.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the size and the weight of a component used for collection of reflected light by providing an integrated optical element, which includes a beam forming part and beam bending part made one-piece and a light collection part which collects reflected light to lead it to a detector, to scan and move a light beam. SOLUTION: A light beam 16 from a semiconductor laser 18 passes through a plastic lens 20 and is turned at 90 deg. by total reflection in a prism 22. It is emitted from the prism 22 and passes through an aperture 24 in a collection mirror 26 and strikes on an oscillatory scanning mirror 28. Then, an exit light beam 30 for scanning is generated and is led to indicia to be read. Reflected light 32 from a mark is first received by the oscillatory scanning mirror 28, and this mirror 28 leads it to a concave 34 of the collection mirror 26. The concave 34 focuses light on a photo detector 40 through an aperture 36 and a filter 38. The output signal of the photo detector 40 is supplied to proper electronics in a printed circuit board 14 by electric coupling 42.

Preferably, the reader is shock protected by a thermo-plastic elastomer housing section. An outgoing light beam is directed at a non-orthogonal angle relative to the PCB.

Abstract: An optical scan module, for example for an optical scanner, includes an integrally molded plastics material member which defines not only the laser focusing lens, but also the laser focusing aperture and the collection mirro r. In addition, the molded member may act to house and to locate both a semiconductor laser and a photodetector, thereby ensuring easy and accurate placement of those elements within the scanning assembly. The optical assembly may be in modular form, mounted onto a common printed circuit board with a beam scanner.
