    Abstract: PURPOSE: To prevent bar code symbols from being unreadable by substituting illegal characters in a first expression with elements of corresponding characters in a second expression. CONSTITUTION: First, first and second original conversion images showing first and second analog scan signals are preserved. Thereafter, the second original conversion image is used to correct, namely, improve the first original conversion image, thereby generating a first corrected, namely, improved conversion image. With respect to correction of a distorted original conversion image, at least one element of a distorted character in the first distorted conversion image is changed based on at least one element of a corresponding character of the second original conversion image to generate the first corrected conversion image, thereby correcting the distorted original conversion image. Thus, all bar code symbols are accurately decoded from this first corrected conversion image, and they are prevented from being unreadable.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide a new method reading a two-dimensional bar code symbol through the use of a few light sources and mechanically simple structure. CONSTITUTION: This method simultaneously illuminates the plural areas of the different light reflectance in the bar code symbol by using a laser luminous flux 12 with a thin and long cross section. In order that the two-dimensional area of the symbol is illuminated with the lapse of time, the laser luminous flux 12 is swept on the symbol in the crossing direction of the thin and long size of an illuminated area until the symbol is read. Reflected light from the illuminated area of the symbol is image-formed on a linear sensor array. After then the sensor array is scanned to generate an electric signal expressing the spatial intensity difference of light image-formed along the linear path within a viewing range.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide a method for combining scanning pieces obtained by decoding a bar code symbol consisting of divided plural bar code elements expressing an arrayed data character string. CONSTITUTION: This method scans a symbol along a first scarming path including a delimiter to obtain a first character string, scans the symbol along a second scanning path including another delimiter to obtain a second character string, compares the lengths of the first and second strings of data characters with a prescribed length and combines the first and second strings based on the comparison to generate arrayed data character string. Another version of this method loads the first and second strings in a stitch buffer and stores corresponding reliability namely redundant buffer as well so as to store expected reliability information of individual decoded character. Only when information stored in a reliability buffer passes a series of tests, the bar code symbol is judged to be decoded correctly.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain a bar code scanner which has a wide operation range by arranging an optical element in the optical path between a laser light source and a scanning mirror. CONSTITUTION: This laser scanner is provided with the laser light source 20, e.g. a gas laser or semiconductor laser diode, an optical means which forms a diffraction pattern 25 having a center beam spot 26 with a specific diameter, and a scanning means which makes a scan with a modulated laser beam 14 across a symbol 15. The barrel part 11 of a housing has an exit window 13. The laser beam 14 exits through the window 13 to impinge on the symbol 15 placed outside the housing and scan it. The laser beam 14 moves across the symbol 15 to draw a scanning line 16. The scanning motion of this laser beam 14 is caused by an oscillatory mirror 17 driven by a stepping motor 18. Consequently, the wide operation range, i.e. depth of focus is obtained.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To facilitate correction in accordance with uses by using a laser availability signal to control the gain characteristic. CONSTITUTION: When the signal from a photodetector 15 is applied to a detection circuit 17, a feedback signal is sent to an amplifier/digitizer 16, and the laser availability signal which corrects the light output from a light source 11 or changes the scanning angle is sent to a control part 14 to start a decoding circuit 18. The laser availability signal is used as the feedback signal to control the gain characteristic of the amplifier/digitizer 16.
