Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and method which increases the operating range, in order to improve the performance of an electro-optical system and/or changes a beam cross section. SOLUTION: Voltage is impressed to a variable lens, in order to change a shape of liquid of the variable lens so that the operating range in an electro-optical reading apparatus or imaging device for reading inscription can be enlarged. Abstract:
A checkout system includes a clerk-operated bi-optical workstation through which products having target data are passed to a bagging area, and a customer-operated accessory reader having an accessory window facing the bagging area and a data capture assembly for capturing additional target data of additional targets associated with transaction-related items, particularly over a restricted range of working distances that terminates short of the bagging area, and for preventing the accessory reader from capturing the target data of the products in the bagging area.

Abstract:
Image enhancement of symbol targets and non-symbol targets is performed based on the distance to the target, and optionally on the type of target being imaged, by an imaging system to improve reader performance. An axicon and other lenses are preferred to capture light from the target.
Abstract:
A plurality of solid-state imagers is mounted in a reader, such as a bi-optical, dual window, point-of-transaction workstation, for capturing images along different fields of view of diverse targets useful for customer identification, customer payment validation, operator surveillance, and coded indicia. The imagers are commonly mounted on a circuit board for joint installation at, and joint removal from, the reader for ease of serviceability.
