    Abstract: A train loading system is disclosed for loading material onto cars of a train. The system comprises a surge bin arranged to receive material and supply material to cars of a train that travels relative to the surge bin, flow of material from the surge bin being controllable to prevent or permit flow of material from the surge bin and thereby control the volume of material loaded into a car of the train. The system also comprises at least one freeboard measuring device arranged to produce at least one measured freeboard value indicative of a front and/or rear freeboard of a car. The system is arranged to determine a car mass error value representing an error between a car mass value indicative of a mass of material in a car and a defined car mass set point, and to use the car mass error value to produce at least one freeboard set point indicative of desired front and rear freeboard values. The system is also arranged to determine at least one freeboard error value indicative of an error between a measured freeboard value and a freeboard set point and to control timing of flow of material from the surge bin based on the freeboard error value so as to control the mass and volume of material loaded into the car.

    Abstract: A train loading system is disclosed for loading material onto cars of a train. The system comprises a reclaimer arranged to reclaim material for loading onto a train from a material bench at a reclaim rate, and a surge bin arranged to receive material from the reclaimer and supply material to cars of a train that travels under the surge bin. The surge bin includes a clam having a trim position controllable to modify an outflow rate of material from the surge bin and thereby a train loading rate of material onto a train, the clam trim position dependent on the train speed such that an increase in the train speed causes an increase in the clam trim position and thereby an increase in the train loading rate, and a decrease in the train speed causes a decrease in the clam trim position and thereby a decrease in the train loading rate. The system also includes a feed forward component arranged to determine a feed forward train speed based on the reclaim rate, the feed forward train speed being used to set the train speed, and a feedback component arranged to modify the feed forward train speed based on the amount of material in the surge bin. The amount of material in the surge bin is maintained at a level such that stopping of the reclaimer or stopping of the train because of the level of material in the surge bin is avoided.

    Abstract: A train loading system for loading material onto cars of a train is disclosed. The system comprises a material chute disposed above a car travel path along which cars to be loaded with material travel during loading, and a slewing conveyor arranged to deliver material to the material chute, the slewing conveyor being controllably slewable in a direction perpendicular to the direction of travel of material on the slewing conveyor. The material chute is arranged such that the direction of delivery of material from the material chute is dependent on the slewing location of the slewing conveyor relative to the material chute. The system also includes a mass measurement device arranged to produce a mass value indicative of the mass of material travelling on the slewing conveyor, and a mass estimator arranged to produce a car mass estimate of the mass of material delivered to each car as the car travels under the chute, the car mass estimate based on the mass value, the slewing position of the slewing conveyor relative to the chute and the position of the car relative to the chute. The system is arranged to communicate the car mass estimate to an operator, and to predict the final mass of material in a car in consideration of immediate slewing of the slewing conveyor from a first position wherein material is delivered to the car to a second position wherein material is delivered to an adjacent car.
