By employing adequate conditions, this material which is easy to handle makes it possible to achieve a steady manufacturing process and a constant quality of product. The obtained membrane is excellent in selective permeability and bio-compatibility, and expected to show its effect mainly in medical applications such as separation of plasma.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide a polymethyl methacrylate separation membrane suitable for concentrating a solution and separating a substance therefrom by precise filtration or ultrafiltration, having an isotactic part and a syndiotactic part for which the permeability of albumin and the permeation amount of water are respectively prescribed. CONSTITUTION:A base polymer comprising a polymethyl methacrylate polymer with an average MW of 100,000 or more, especially, about 200,000-1,500,000 which is a mixture consisting of a polymer relatively high in isotacticity and a polymer relatively high in syndiotacticity is prepared. In the next step, this base polymer is dissolved in a solvent finally replaceable with water such as dimethylsulfoxide or dimethylformamide and, to the resulting solution, water and a surfactant are further added in order to control a fine pore size. Subsequently, the aforementioned solution for which the polymer concn. is adjusted to 5-30% is emitted from hollow metal spinneret pores held at 500 deg.C or more and solidified. The obtained titled separation membrane has albumin permeability of 30% or more and water permeation amount (water UFR) of 0.1-30/hr.m .mm.Hg.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:Pitch is melted, degassed and extruded, as the heat history which the pitch undergoes is being controlled, at specific conditions, to obtain carbon fiber stably without yarn breakage and void formation. CONSTITUTION:At first pitch is melted and degassed usually by treating it with reduced pressure. Then, the pitch is extruded out of the nozzles as the heat history the pitch undergoes is being controlled so that the amount of gas formed by pyrolysis becomes less than 0.2ml per 1g of pitch. The spinning of the pitch is preferably effected using a vented extruder.
