A colour filter comprises a transmission area (8) and reflection area (7) in which at least one colour pixel of red, green and blue pixels is formed of the same material, wherein at least one transparent sub-area (10,12) having no colour layer is formed in a part of the reflection area, and the size of the sub-area (12) is 20 mu m or more and 2000 mu m or less. The present invention also provides a liquid crystal display including such a colour filter.

The present invention also provides a liquid crystal display for both transmission display and reflection display with a cheap manufacturing cost, wherein the different of chromaticity between the transmission display and reflection display is small, and the surface of the transmission area and reflection area have small step heights.

A semitransmission liquid crystal display having a high color reproducibility in the transmission display mode and excellent characteristics (color reproducibility, luminance) in the reflection display mode and produced at low cost and a color filter for a semitransmission liquid crystal display such that the difference in chromaticity between the reflection display and transmission display is small, and the luminance is high are disclosed. The semitransmission liquid crystal display comprising reflecting means including a pair of opposed substrates with a liquid crystal layer interposed therebetween and a light source using ambient light and a backlight light source is characterized in that a color filter having pixels each including transmission and reflection regions and a coloring layer made of the same material is provided and the backlight light source is a three-wavelength LED backlight.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color filter in a liquid crystal display element concurrently attaining a transmissive display and a reflective display with little difference of chromaticity between the two and being flat. SOLUTION: The color filter for the liquid crystal display element is characterized by making pixels with at least one color have a transmissive region and a reflective region composed of the same color material, forming a region without any color material in the reflective region and having a compensation layer to compensate difference of chromaticity between the transmissive region and the reflective region caused by respective light sources used in both regions in the region without any color material.

PURPOSE:To obtain the phase difference plate which can be widened in a visual angle range when the phase difference plate is built into a liquid crystal display body of an STN(super twisted nematic) system by having the specific phase difference plate. CONSTITUTION:The phase difference plate is obtd. by laminating a phase difference plate compensation plate and a visual field angle compensation plate and has an achromatic effect when the phase difference plate is viewed from the front and diagonal of the liquid crystal display body. In addition, the phase difference plate has R0, R0', R40, R40' satisfying the conditions of equations I to TV when the retardations at the perpendicular incidence of both compensation plates are respectively designated as R0, R0' and retardations at the diagonal incidence inclined by 40 deg. in the main orientation axis direction of the phase difference plate compensation plate respectively as R40, R40'. In the equations, DELTAR and DELTAR' are inverse codes. The phase difference plate adequate for a liquid crystal display device having an excellent visual field angle characteristic is industrially obtd. in this way.

PURPOSE:To decrease dependence on view field angle and to widen a visible range by specifying the polymer material of a mixture which constitutes a film comprising two or more polymer components. CONSTITUTION:A film comprising a mixture of polymer materials is uniaxially oriented. Each polymer material used has positive or negative double refraction DELTAni when each single polymer material is uniaxially oriented. DELTAni is defined as formula I, wherein nalphai and nbetai are the refractive indices of the film of single polymer in the orientation direction and perpendicular to the orientation, respectively. Thereby, dependence on view field angle is decreased and visibility can be improved.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of producing a color filter for a liquid crystal display device by which formation of a gap between a black matrix and a color layer or overlapping of color layers are prevented and the color filter having satisfactory quality can be obtained, and to provide a photomask used for the production of the color filter. SOLUTION: This method of producing color filter has the features that the filter material is exposed with light having offset for the alignment target value.

PURPOSE:To obtain, at a low cost, a polarizing film for a liquid crystal display body having a low angle-dependency of the polarization characteristics and excellent durability by forming the film composed of two layers of a specific polarizing layer and double refraction layer, the two layers of which are formed as a substantially inseparable base material film. CONSTITUTION:The polarizing film is composed of the two layers of the polarizing layer and the double refraction layer, each optical axis direction of which is at 0 deg. or 90 deg. angle to each other, and which are formed as a sheet of the substantially inseparable base material film. Any base material film which is provided with the prescribed polarizance and double refractivity can be used as the polarizing film. The polarizing film of this composition which has a low angle dependency and excellent durability and is appropriately used for the liquid crystal display device, can be provided industrially at a low cost. At the time of applying the polarizing film to one surface of a liquid crystal display body, the visual angle characteristics and reliability of displays such as word processor, portable television, on-vehicle displays, etc., can be improved.
