    Abstract: PURPOSE:A porous diaphragm is set at the lower part of the cultivation tank to conduct the exchange of culture medium and washing of the cells and microcarriers in a short time efficiently. CONSTITUTION:The porous diaphragm 8 is demountably set at the lower part of the cultivation tank 1 by means of, e.g., the flange 9 or the like. The stopping valve 11 and the draining nozzle 6 are provided on the bottom side of the diaphragm 8. The porous diaphragm permits liquids such as the culture medium to pass through but not the microcarriers and is required not to elute the components inhibiting the cell growth.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To prevent the peeling of cells from a microcarrier surface in washing thereof, by washing the cells grown on the microcarrier surface with an aqueous solution of a salt containing a nonproteinic water-soluble high polymeric substance. CONSTITUTION:Cells grown on a microcarrier surface are washed with an aqueous solution of a salt adjusted to a suitable osmotic pressure. In the process, a nonproteinic water-soluble high polymeric substance, e.g. dextran, methyl cellulose or polyvinyl pyrrolidone, in an amount in the range of 0.0001-1wt%, preferably 0.001-0.1wt%, is added to the aqueous solution.
