Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an O-alkyl substituted polysaccharide derivative efficiently and in high purity and to provide a method for producing an optically active substance using the derivative obtained by the method. SOLUTION: The method for producing the derivative comprises 1) a step for subjecting a polysaccharide to the alkylation, 2) a step for removing the non-reacted materials and/or the byproduct impurities in step 1 and 3) a derivative step for producing a derivative of the resulted and purified alkylated polysaccharide. The method for producing the substance uses a separating agent having the derivative obtained by the method as an active ingredient and it consists of contacting a mixture of a classificating solution comprising the derivative obtained by the method and a diluent, a desorbent and an optical isomer with a sorbent comprising a porous material.

CONSTITUTION: A prescribed ethylphenol isomer is adsorbed on and separated from (B) an ethylphenol isomer mixture by using (A) an X type zeolite adsorbent (e.g. containing a metal such as Li, K, Rb, Cs, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Pb, etc., and 1-10wt.% of water based on the adsorbent). For example, a mixture comprising m-ethylphenol (B1 ), p-ethylphenol (B2 ) and one or more alkyl phenols is used as the component B, the component B1 is adsorbed on and separated from the component B containing the component B1 , the component B2 and one or more alkylphenols by using the component B containing Mg, Ca or Sr and the component B2 is adsorbed on and separated from the component B by using the component B containing K or Ba.
